Hi everyone. I am an adult with a mild case of CF. I recently got out of the hospital and have been prescribed pulmozyme once a day, and albuterol 4 times a day.

That being said, I understand the importance of doing the pulmozyme treatment. I also understand the importance of doing the albuterol treatment before the pulmozyme- albuterol opens up the airways so pulmozyme works better.

Although I feel a slight difference in using albuterol, I don't think the difference is significant enough to use it 4 times a day! Using it that much would soooo interupt my life. I'd be tethered to my neb machine.

Question is: Does albuterol help halt the progression of CF, or is it a comfort thing. If it is a comfort thing, I could do without. If it is a deterent, I may consider stepping it up, if only a bit.

Thanks for your opinions and comments.

Most CF stuff isnt cut & dry like saying does it help hault things.

What it does is help keep the airways open so the junk can move up leaving a less likely chance of an infection brewing because the junk is building up.

Do you have an asmtha component that they are recommending 4 times a day? If so why not albeuterol & then something like Advair.

How about using an albeuterol inhaler instead of nebs for 2 of the times if they really want you to use albeuterol that often?

Without knowing WHY they want this makes it difficult to give anymore of my ever so humble opinions <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

I don't believe that albuterol helps to halt the progression of the disease, but it can help other meds be more effective by opening up your airways. If you inhale albuterol before the DNASE and that helps the DNASE penetrate deeper in the lungs, and the DNASE helps thin the mucus which allows you to cough it up and out, which CAN help slow the progression, then ipso facto the albuterol is somewhat helping slow the progression. Does that make sense or was that thoroughly confusing? Bottom line: Albuterol by itself is probably more comfort than control.

The treatment regimine goes as such: albuterol, pulmozyme, then followed by advair. Then albuterol another 3 times per day. So far this is the regimine.

It the future I suspect they will push saline and a vest. Prior to my hospital stay my FEV1 was at 73, after... 90. That is a bit more info.
