I think I'm going to be the
To me, I never understand why people who sound "bad" are going to parties and exposing others to their germs. NO ONE wants to get sick. I think it is selfish.
If I know people have a cold, no way will I go near them. If I go to party and see someone is sick, I stay away from them. If they come near me, I make a joke out of it but say, "You have a cold. I'll just stand back here..."
In the old days, when I was really succeptible, my boyfriend offered to fix a plate for me, so I wouldn't have to touch anything. (He didn't want to see me sick for 6 weeks) Nowadays, I do touch everything and make sure I don't touch my nose and eyes and keep using Purel. I always stand back from people anyway. Fortunately Americans have the biggest personal space distance betwen them anyway -- so no one ever seems to notice.
Since you can't control young kids being near sick kids, I'd drop off the gifts, say Merry Christmas and leave. If you need an excuse, I'd say "My doctor doesn't want him to be a parties during cold and flu season. We feel terrible that we're going to miss out. But we have no choice."
Holiday time is the time when colds and flu are spread. People in close quarters and dry heat. I personally will not go near anybody who is sick. And as stated antibiotics do nothing for viruses. But FYI colds are MOST contageous the first 3 days. Next 2 less contagious. For me, if they sound sick, forget it.
