I'm actually really glad you brought this us, because sometimes it seems as if you're the only one with CF who feels fat in some way. I know it's far better not to have to fight for weight gain! but knowing that doesn't always help when some people get to eat thousands of calories a day...
The problem I have is that whenever I lose any weight (even if I'd just gained it), my CF clinic people are like, oh no! Work on that! I should say I'm 120 pounds and 5'2"--about the same as those others who have posted, actually-- so perfectly normal (as are those others, I personally think...) but I can understand the feeling. People with CF are supposed to be skinny! (and again, I mean this in the irrational way a young mind works, not as any offence to those of you who are even more dissastifed with low weight).
I haven't really said anything useful, I guess... but thank you for helping ME know I'm not alone...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I do know exactly how you feel. My weight is something that I have battled with all my life. I have never been overweight, but have always had a huge appetite, since I just found out that I have CF I thought that if I ate enough to not be hungry that I would gain weight. I have been buliemic-anorexic since about the age of 18. I did go to a clinic about 7 years ago and am better. I do still have bad days, get really scared that I am fat. I know what you mean when you say that you have to be comfortable with your body, but your eyes do play tricks on you. I don't know if this helps at all, but if you have any questions at all you can ask.

Take care,
Donna

Hi,

I have to say...the last year has been incredibly hard on me, and I'll tell you why. I am 5'5" and I weigh 110 lbs. Just a year ago, I weighed 132. I dropped tons of weight in a short amount of time. At first I did want to lose 5 lbs, but as my wieght kept dropping, so did my health.

I would give anything to be 132...even more overwieght, just to feel healthier!!!!! don't take your weight for granted and don't try to lose. Your health WILL suffer and it will take more of a physical and emotional toll on you, rather than if you're overweight.

Keep up the 120!!!

I can completely understand where you are coming from. I am now 32 and am struggling again with body issues. I worried about my weight from the age of 16-27 and did not take care of myself so I could be thin. Eventually I realized the danger it was causing my life.
But I still know that it is hard to balance what our doctors tell us about our BMI and our lung function and what society tells us as females about our weight. I got really sick last year and lost about 25 lbs. When I returned to work before gaining all the weight back, everyone told me how good I looked with all the weight off. Boy did that give me a complex. That is what I am again struggling with.
But there is also a rational side to me that knows what is better for us. Do talk with your social worker and dietician. Perhaps they can come up with some compromises that will work for your body image and satisfy the doctor. This will keep you healthy and allow you not to worry so much how you feel about your weight.
I wish you success and hope that you can find a place where you are happy and healthy in the body you have.

I also wanted to comment on "there is a light that never goes out." Morrissey is my favorite. He got me through some hard times. And still does.

Stay strong.
