Ibuprofen

Hey all!
I know some of you are on large amounts of Ibuprofen for inflammation. I remember many, MANY years ago when there were still study trials of high doses of ibuprofen in CFers to see if it worked for inflammation (both in the lungs and sinuses/nasal polyps). I almost did a couple of those trials but ended up not being able to at the time. Anyway, I have fevers almost all the time due to M. abscessus and I've noticed A LOT more inflammation and shortness of breath with the weather getting warmer (and more humid). This happens to me every year. Spring/Summer is so hard for me to breathe during. I took 600mg of ibuprofen today before I went to work this morning. I was already feeling a crumminess coming on and didn't want a fever halfway through my shift. All day, did I not only not have a fever at all (which I expected), but I didn't notice inflammation and "lung stuffiness" nearly as much as I usually do. To those of you on high dose ibuprofen therapy, what are your doses and do you notice a difference? Have you had any troubles with side effects with such continuous high doses (I've had kidney problems in the past and wonder if that would happen again with ibuprofen)? Do you take the same amount every day or only at certain times like when you're particularly wheezy or in any kind of pain? Did you have to go into the hospital to see what levels were right for you or were you just prescribed a specific amount to take based on your weight or something? How often do you take it (everyday, Q6 or Q8)?
I know that's a lot of questions, thanks for any and all replies!

I used to be on it, but by choice went off. When I was on it, I gradually worked up to 1200 mgs twice a day, everyday. Now at first I was probably on 600 twice a day, and then 800 and so forth. I was very good when I was on it. I did not have any side effects unless I took it on an empty stomach. If I did not have anything to eat before the motrin, I would throw up. My PFTs were good and consistent and my cough was less. Towards the end, I would get a lot of sinus pain and pressure and found myself almost addicted. If I missed a dose or was even an hour late for a dose, I was in agony and it would take a longer time to take effect. And that kind of changed my mind, I am very scared of becoming too reliant on drugs. I obviously will take my abx and other meds, but with Motrin/painkillers, I just didn't want to deal with it.

So about 2 1/2 years ago, I started to see an ENT. We did surgery and I was great! I no longer needed the Motrin and was very healthy for a year. After that year, I started to get sick more often and was on IV's more than I liked, so I went back to the ENT. I had surgery back in February of this year and it did not have the same effect. I had been using Motrin a lot more before the surgery so that's another reason I knew I needed it again. I am hoping that now I have turned a corner and will be healthy again. But I no longer take Motrin...if I am in pain I take tylenol but not every day. Eventually I may need it again, but for right now, I am giving my body a break...it is definitely worth a shot though! I had great luck when I was on it...and I was on it for like 10 years straight probably.

I love ibuprofen and try to use it carefully. I dose myself 200 mg at a time and do not use it if I am feeling well, which luckily is pretty often. My mucus production is lower when I am on it and I would not be surprised if my PFTs were different pre- and post-ibuprofen absorption too. Some day I will have to test it.
I have also used an arthritis NSAID called Meloxicam. It is supposed to be easier on the stomach. That was for a joint problem, but I felt it worked less well on the joint than ibuprofen. I wonder if it could be used on CFers.

Hmm I am not officially on it for inflammation, but I take it 1-4 times a day depending on fevers. I have to take 600-800 mg at a time to get rid of a fever most times, sometimes on bad ones I have to take a nap or something to help sweat it out.

I mainly have to take it during fevers now b/c my SOB gets sooo bad during a fever. If I dont have fevers, I dont take it and for something like a headache or lung pain from pluerasly, if I dont have a fever already, I take just 400 mg for that.

I have not had any problems that I know of, although now that I think about it, I wonder if all my stomach issues are from this b/c I get nauseous a lot... but I dont ever notice it correlating directly with an ibuprofen dose.
