My name is Josh. I'm 25 and at 19% lung compasity I am currintly being evaluated at Standford for a duble lung transplant. They say I'm in the "Transplant Window". My question is simply complicated. What is life like after surgery? What do you go through? Is it as mutch of a daily battle or is it totally worth it?

Well, let me be the first to say... YES!!! It was totally worth it. I was doing breathing treaments 4x a day, taking fist fulls of pills, and basically confined to a couch all day because that's as far as my o2 tubing reached. Now I don't do any more breathing treatments, my lung function is steadily climbing (I'm at 62% now, but just had a surgery that set me back a little - fluid on the left lung gelled and needed removing), I still take handfuls of pills but it's somehow easier, and you can't get me to sit still now. I've made plans to rejoin my gym, I'm re-starting dance classes, and I have plans to run a half marathon this spring! I was even able to walk around the mall talking w/o oxygen!! Life has become enjoyable again <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I check my vitals in the morning and evening, but i just keep that stuff at my bedside and it's so easy. I thought it would be a pain... but no... I never wake up without thanking my donor each day for this. It's wonderful!!!!

Josh,

Worth it! Worth it! Worth it! The last 5 years of my life has been absolutely amazing. I can do things now that I have never been able to do before. I am able to work hard, play hard, and take care of myself every day with great results. I'm in the gym everyday, I'm strong, and I'm just as healthy as any other 26 year old out there. I just ran a half marathon in the spring too (13.1 Miles!!).

And yes, there are bumps in the road. Meds, Colds, being careful, and most recently for me, PTLD. But even with all of that, my life now is still 1,000,000,000,000 times better than it was before. I was confined to an apartment. On oxygen. Had very little to no social life. Couldn't go to school anymore. Life was just so difficult. And while you will experience things post transplant that disrupt your life, it's very very well worth it.

Good luck!
