Impaired Glucose

I know I've been "borderline" diabetic for a few years, but that's the extent of what my doctor has ever said to me. I've never been told to change anything or worry about it.

Last month I took a 2 hour fasting-glucose test, and yesterday they told me I have impaired glucose. I don't know what the numbers are though. Now I need to schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist.

What should I expect from seeing an endocrinologist and what might they tell me? Am I on a sure path to getting diabetes now?

I'm clueless. What is the difference between borderline and having impaired glucose? Is it okay that I just had a rootbeer float? They're my favorite!

Hi CowTown,
Let me see if i can explain. CFRD is just one more of the complications of CF unfortunately. I read that 43% of CFers over age 30 have CFRD. Good thing your docs are on top of it. The earlier you figure out if you have it, the less complications the diabetes will cause (as long as you take care of it too!). As our pancreases become more damaged, the less insulin it can put out, so you end up needing to supplement, usually with insulin shots.

My first endo appointment took the most part of a day. It was at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. They tested my eyes, my reflexes, my hearing... diabetes affects sooo much. I was overwhelmed and very scared. Make sure you take a notebook with you, as they may fill you with so much info you won't remember even a portion of what they say! (knowledge is power, so this is good). If you are comfortable with it, I suggest taking a friend or family member, both for support and for an extra ear to catch everything the doc says.

Don't worry about your rootbeer float. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I have CFRD and I can have as many rootbeer floats as I can fit in my tummy! I just have to take insulin to keep my sugars in a healthy range.

If you would like more info check out two pages I wrote:
