Impedance Test for GERD

I had mentioned that my boys were having this test this week, but I didn't think to explain it. Here's an explanation:

Impedance pH Testing

Impedance pH is a test to measure the amount of acid and non-acid reflux in the esophagus using a special thin catheter which is passed through the nostrils, down the throat, and remains in the distal esophagus for approximately 24 hours. The catheter is attached to a small monitor worn during the study. It is usually used in the diagnosis of atypical gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) symptoms.

Hi Jane,

My daughter Maryam had this test done last year, after an endoscopy showed that her 4th fundoplication had slipped. Its done the same way a Ph study is done,ur right it just gives a bit more info in reguards to the non acidic reflux. We found out that my daughter has a great degree of non acidic reflux that would not have shown up on a regular PH probe. It can also give an Idea of esophegeal motility. Good luck to your boys, I hope you get the answers you are looking for.

Hi Jane,
Is this test painful? I was wondering if this was the only way they can tell if a parson has GERD? Makailyn takes prevacid, but has never complained of heart burn. I'm just wondering if she even needs to be put on prevacid.
Do the boys get to eat while this thing is down their esophogus?

Sory about all the questions? It sounds like you are going to be really busy.
I'll be thinking about you and the boys. Wish all the best,,,,,,,,,Karla

Sorry Karla, I missed this one.

No the test is not painful. It is uncomfortable (gaggy)to have the tube in your throat, but they could eat. The worst part is when they insert it. This time they were asleep so we avoided that part. I believe it helps diagnose GERD, but they do other tests too. Josh had a gastric emptying test a few years ago too.
