OK so on of the things that always comes back in my culture is Staph but when I look at my results it listed all my bugs and it looked liked this :

Staph + 4
Asperguliss + 2

and 3 other things that I can't seem to remmber right now but does anyone know what the +4 and +2 stand for? I have never seen this before. any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kara

I asked my doctor that once and he said its the amount of bacteria of that type. So staph ++ means (I am told) a moderate amount. Staph +++ means alot and I guess 4+ means loads. I am not sure what qualifies as a + or ++ etc with your lab so you might be better asking your doctor. Hope your feeling ok, I normally know when I have ++++ something!

When you see 1+, 2+ etc up to 4+ it is telling you how much bacteria is there, 4+ being the highest. In the case of your lab results, you've got quite a lovely staph infection built up. You've also got an Aspergillus infection.

Antibiotics will take care of the staph, but you're going to need antifungals for the Aspergillus. Depending on whether your labwork also involved an IgE test (to see if you're having an allergic reaction to the Aspergillus) you will be prescribed Sporanox, of Vfend, and maybe even a small burst of prednisone.

Here's an article I wrote about ABPA:
