Is your father available to go car shopping with me? Sounds like he is quite a bargainer!

Well he can be. He knows what he is talking about when it comes to cars most of the time. He just gets to cheap and you never get anything being as cheap as he is. But he can be a good bargainer.

Whoa, and they didn't replace your car? Well, I guess it would be kind of hard to prove, and it would be a huge legal battle that wouldn't be worth it in the end...

To tell the truth, i really wish less people had cars, so then it would be worth it to make public trasportation better all over the placeTaking the bus still turns a thirty minute drive into two hours, which isn't all that conveiniantIt would be nice if we didn't have to worry about having a car at all!

Someone mentioned repossesed cars; That's what they sell at the police auctions I was talking about too. A lot would be much better that an auction, though. I didn't know they had lots!

Hi Julie,

Sorry but I have no car advice I have been on this site for awhile and know you are an RN with the navy. I am studying to be an RN in Canada and the starting salary for a nurse is about 40,000$ canadian. ( Roughly 20,000$ US) . I always thought nurses made alot more money in the US than we do. I am just curious about the salary range for an RN in the US. Here the top salary is about 60,000$ canadian if you have a college degree and about 68,000$ (roughly) if you have a university degree. A head nurse usually gets about 80,000$ canadian. I am only quoting Public system salaries...Private clinics make a bit more I believe. Could you give me some info on this please...

Thanx

RNs here in NJ make about 45 to 50K to start a year if you work full time. I a think it is a little more or a little less depending on where you live.. At my hospital where I work RNs start out at about 48K a year and that is right out of school. My work also gives a 15K sign on bonus as well..Agency nurses can make a lot more.

I didn't think Julie was an RN though so maybe that is why, but I could be wrong. Anyway good luck Julie,

Jennifer

Thanks for the info Jennifer Dear god they make more $$ than we do. And remember we pay about 50% of our salaries to the Government in taxes. I would never leave Canada but now I know why so many nurses here do.

Thanks again

I am not an RN, jennifer is correct. I do RN work in the military (blood draws, blood transfusions, medication distribution, pushing meds, patient care, charting, immunizations, sick call, chemo...+++++) as a hospital corpsman. I guess that's where the misunderstanding might have been. I went to school for 7 months to be a corpsman as opposed to 2 years or 4 years for an associates or BSN respectively. My mom is an RN and makes 80k a year. Military pay is also a lot different than working in the civilian world because they pay for your school therefore you earn less in the beginning and for quite a while after. Hope that makes more sense.

Gosh Julie you can do all that in only 7 months training.. That must have been some intense training.. Regular RNs can not administer Chemo here, they have to get chemo certified. You are most certainly getting ripped off. I go to school and my work pays for it through a tution reimbursment program and when I graduate they would never dream of paying me less money..

Maybe I am missing something which is quite possible but holly cow you do all those services for the Navy and they pay you that??? I would think they would take better care of their dedicated ppl then this. I have a friend whos daughter is an RN in the Navy, I am going to ask her what she gets paid. I think she went is already an RN though so that may be different.

I guess since the Military trained you, you can't use your training in the non military world either because not even LPNs can hang blood in the united states...I am sorry I really think you should be paid a lot more money for you hard work. Even here as a nursing assistant which is a few months of training they get about 22K a year. and they work their behinds off.

Let us know how things work out for you with the car.

I really admire your hard work,

Julie,

Don't really know what to tell you. I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. I will suggest that leasing is not a good idea if you drive a lot. They usually allow 12,000 miles a year. If you go over that you have to pay a certain amount per mile. I leased my first car but I didn't drive much (I had a total of 10,000 miles at turn in) . I had to turn it in when the 36 months was up or I could buy it...I opted for turn in and get a new one. Also when you lease, you are basically throwing money away. My second car that I leased at first and then bought. I hear Dodge Neons have good gas mileage, but not sure since I havent ever driven one. You can go to MSN and look under Autos, and do a seach on different one to see what is best for you. They usually tell a general price for something new, warrenties, built, gas mileage, etc. You can also look for Used ones in ur area too.

Hi Julie,

In response to the scam you saw on Dateline -- network TV has done a great job of pumping fear into viewers. If I acted on every one of those specials, I couldn't give my social security # to ANYONE (even employers), couldn't have a drink at a bar, couldn't let my car out of my sight, couldn't say hello to a stranger, couldn't safely bite into an apple (razor blades), couldn't buy a diamond that's worth more than the paper the certificate is on, etc.

You can get a great used car with some homework. A good mechanic (or car savvy friend) can tell if a car's even been painted let alone if major repair has been done or if the car doesn't have original parts. I'd recommend buying from an original owner and asking to see maintenance records. You can verify where they originally purchased the car. IMO, buying from dealers is a false sense of security -- they charge at least $1000 more for the same car you can purchase from a private owner. You can get a good deal, Julie.

Is anyone knowledgable about those certified used car deals? I was thinking about going that route for a car, but are they worth it? Or just a marketing gimmick?

Thanks,

I networked, my cousin is the manager of a dealership in spokane (His parents lost contact with him 4 years ago and I tracked him down over the last 3 weeks). He made a few phone calls and got me a he** of a deal on a 2005 Honda accord. With his help, we paid for it the same as what we would have paid for a 1998-2002 honda accord in excellent condition. It all worked out for the best, and now I am in contact with a cousin who I though I would never see or speak to again so it is great overall.

Thanks for everyone's recommendations!!
