Hi there,
We are back in the hospital again. We just got out on the 10th and had an endoscopy on the 13th. We are still on merrem antibiotics. But Ellie is still coughing and wheezing, we went to the doctor today and admitted us they did <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> . I guess the thought process now is she is so coughy, wheezy, and snotty, because she is aspirating as she refluxes. We have done 2 swallow studies and she does not aspirate when going down so they think maybe as it's coming up (refluxing) she's aspirating and this is causing pnemonia, etc. They are wanting to do a Nissen and this thought scares us. The thought of her not being able to throw up ever. Does anyone have one (or have kiddos who have them?) What exactly is it? I speak with the doctors tomorrow but I'd like your opinions. Should I make sure it's not allergies first. THis is such a major surgery and Ellie is only 4 months old.

Wow, I just read about this on the internet. I would definitely make sure this is absolutely necessary and there is nothing else to do first. It looks like a safe procedure, but the normal things that happen after, like possibly not being able to burp seem like it can lead to a lot of uncomfortable times.

I will keep Ellie in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know what you decide and how her progress goes.

Take Care,
Terry

My daughter got a Nissen one year ago. We too were very scared at the idea. But it has been a blessing. She has had zero problems from it. She had it done laparoscopically which I recommend. Her recovery was just a few days. She also has been able to throw up very easily. They checked and the nissen is still in place. Some can just throw up threw it. If you decide to go ahead with the surgery, make sure you can find a surgeon who is very experienced. From what I hear, that is the key to a successful procedure.

Hi, Sorry to hear this. Nathan had this issue as a baby but outgrew it and the reflux meds helped too. Is she on anything for reflux? Have they tried adjusting the dose or changing to something else? I probably would insist on trying meds and changing meds first before surgery. I am not necessarily against surgery but I would want to know all the other options and try at least one maybe two before going to surgery. If you have already done that, then I agree with Sharon, make sure you get a surgeon that is experienced first. Also, I would not allow a resident or intern to do the procedure, I would make sure the attending was the one actually doing the procedure. Ask them all of your questions and don't let them do the surgery until you are satisfied with the answers, you have to be comfortable and listen to your instincts! You and your instincts are all you have to go by with a 4 month old, you will know what is right for your child in your heart of hearts, you just have to be willing to listen to that gut instinct.
Will keep you and your little one in our prayers,
Patty
