In the hospital

Well my wife is in the hospital this week for some IV antibiotics and hand chest therapy. Her FEV dropped to 37% from 45% in about a year and struggling to maintain weight. Her sputum isn't growing any major bacteria which is good but after some chest x-rays, doctors found a large mass in upper right lobe. It has grown since the last xray but they are not sure if it is fungus or something else. Its pretty scary not know what you are dealing with, hopefully we can come up with a treatment for it. For now she is in good spirits and is getting alot of visitors <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

If anyone has something similar, I would appreciate comments on your experience.

After some nuclear CT scans and sputum culture, doctors say it is most likely Aspergillus fungus ball. Some good news I suppose is there is still bloodflow in the area so she will be taking VFEND to stop the growth.

I am amazed at how quickly the infectious disease specialists we are consulting with suggest surgery which is far more risky.

Has anyone had experience with VFEND drug?

Thanks

Hi,
I have an aspergilloma ( aspergillus fungus ball). I've had it about 4 years now. Vfend is the best oral treatment for it, but it does have some odd side effects. The one ( very common) side effect i get from it is, vision disturbances about 15 minutes after taking it. The disturbances last about 15 minutes or so and then are gone till the next dose.
The chances of it shrinking and going completely away arent that great from what i am told. But to keep it from growing is what we are trying to do ( in my case ) Everyone is different and outcomes can be different, who knows your wife may be able to get rid of it, but so far in my case it hasnt shrunk in 4 years. The one thing you want to do is try to avoid mold ( which you should be doing anyway), digging in the dirt, (aspergillis thrives in dirt), keep your blood sugar (if you are diabetic ) under as good control as you can ( high blood sugar feeds the fungus ball ). If you want you can email me with any questions you can have. Jinxnick@aol.com
