I in my long CF career <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> I've tried lots of cough syrups, but only one worked for me and it contains Guaifenesin. This substance is derived from a natural source and is basically an over the counter expectorant drug and is effective in the treatment of the thickened bronchial mucosa by thining mucus and lubricating the airway. And is also a mild painkiller.
It is also used by singers for its ability to promote secondary mucosal secretion in the respiratory system which is the thinner, lubricating mucus that occurs on the vocal folds naturally when they are healthy and well hydrated. So that could help you with the voice.
You can find this substance in Robitussin or Duratuss, either as a single ingredient or with other substances, usually with antitusives.

Thanks all, I have an appt already this week w/ an ENT guy. I'll ask about the voice, throat clearing thing and getting some allergy meds. I took allergy meds for many years, not sure when or why I stopped.
I'll look into the Guaifensin too and drink more tea today.

I can totally understand (unfortunatly). I clear my throat ALL the time. It's so annoying and so much of it is habit. At my office if the phone rings, I clear my throat. Seriously I'm like a trained animal. I even clear my throat when I get a text...in anticipation that I will talk (which makes no sense with a text, maybe hearing my cell go off is a trigger).
I notice a lot of the throat clearing when I don't get enough water in a day. I'm relly going to try to drink a lot more because I annoy myself and I'm sure I annoy others around me.
good topic.

I get this too! It is so annoying and sometimes makes it hard to sleep. And sometimes it's been so bad that strangers have said "ma'am, are you ok?" The only thing I've found that helps is rinsing my sinuses twice a day and seeing an ENT. But it still doesn't completely go away. I take allergy meds and guaifensin, but they don't help me much. I am thinking about starting allergy shots to see if they help.
