Incontinence

I've never wanted to bring this up in clinic for fear I'm the only sufferer, but hopefully someone here will be able to help. I have a fairly bad issue with incontinence. I'm not preg and that was the only time I could find this topic discussed before when I searched. When I do treatments I have to urinate before, sometimes during and I always have some leakage due to heavy coughing. I hate when I'm out in public and have a coughing fit cuz I feel like I'm gonna wet myself. And only if there's a little leakage, I'm afraid someone will notice a wet spot on my pants if I'm not wearing a panty liner. I don't want to wear a pad all the time and I've tried kegel exercises and don't really notice a change. Has anyone tried that drug advertised on tv- the "always having to go" commercial? Any other tips? I really hope I'm not alone on this! Thanks

Let me be the first to say, you are NOT alone! It is an embarrassing situation but I'm glad you decided to post about it!

I couldn't tell you whether those pills on tv would work. My thought is that they would not because I think they're primarily for controlling the URGE to go...not the inability to hold it in-which is our problem. Because of the heavy coughing and breathing and everything else that we go through, those muscles down there weaken. Kegels are supposed to help with that, but like you, I've never really had earth-moving luck with them. When I'm sick or having a rough day, it's a panty liner for me and they're a pain in the butt.

I know there are a few surgical procedures, I think all of them outpatient, that can be performed. I also think a few ladies here have had them done with success. Here's a link for webmd that explains some of them. Look into it, and hopefully someone else will respond. I was always under the impression with these surgeries, however, that because we cough so much and continually go through actions that weaken the muscles down there, they are not necessarily a permanent solution...you might experience incontinence again somewhere down the road. Me, I just suffer through it. I don't have the greatest insurance coverage and wouldn't know where to start with these surgeries-or if they would even help. I always carry a liner with me and grin and bear it...and wear dark pants, lol.

Good luck.

You are not alone.....many of us suffer from this embarassing situation. Exercise helps but does not stop this. My doc says surgery will help for a while but with the coughing fits...it is not likely to last. He also said the pills advertised are mainly to stop the urgency feeling of having to go. It is just another of the wonderful side effects of this lovely disease known as CF, as if having CF wasn't enough!!!

You are not alone. It is much more of a problem since I have had a baby. For me it is an indicator of infection level. If I'm wetting myself with my evening treatments than I probably need IVs (due to coughing and lung infection nothing to do with UTIs or the like). Jeana on this site wrote a post at one point about how she was getting the surgery. Not sure if she ever got it though.

As you can see, you aren't alone in this. I too have stress incontinence, I always wear a pad because of this. I just never know when I am going to have a coughing fit, when I do, it is terrible. I pray that I do not have a full bladder whenever I cough violently because then even a pad is useless. It is usually IV time whenever it gets to that point, but it is still embarrassing all the same. I do Kegel exercises to help strengthen my pelvic muscles, I think it has helped some. Having had kids also does not help the bladder issue either. As others have said, there are surgical remedies as well as exercises. I am hesitant to undergo anything surgical, I guess I am afraid that it could make things worse which would be horrible.
I hope you find something that works,
hugs, Jenn

I had the surgery done. It has held up for over a year and still doing well. I did wait until I had much greater incontinence before going the surgery route--wearing a pad full time, resorting to diapers and even wetting through those when sick. Getting the surgery was one of the best things ever! If you look up incontinence posted by me, you should get a rundown of the surgery and if you have further questions, give me a holler.

As others have said, you are not alone!! Pre-tx, I had a huge issue with wetting myself when I was coughing, not matter if I had just gone to the bathroom or not. During the times that I was coughing more than normal, I would wear a pad so I didn't pee all over myself.
