increased secretions

I have lived with CF for 34, just about 35 years in November. I have always noticed that when I seem to get a cold, I cough and cough---but never really seem to have a lot of productive mucus. The doctor's always teased me because I sounded so clear. However, I would lose a lot of weight and usually end up in the hospital. However, this past year, I have actually been able to keep on the weight (5ft 1" and weigh about 110lbs) but now I just got a cold and my secretions are uncontrollable. Everytime I cough I bring something (a lot) up. Wondering if this has something to do with my heavier weight? Because this cold seems to be the worse that I have ever had and its not going away---also I seemed to be extremely short of breath. I am waiting for a culture to come back to see what "bugs" I am growing and what will help it--although I seem to be resistent to just about everything at this point. Any suggestions or personal experiences to share?

It could be that your weight is connected to better nutrion/better hydration which makes the cough more productive.

It might just be a different type of flareup that is brewing a not so great bug for ya.

You definitely need a sputum culture to see if that is one of the causes!

Good LUck!

One of the reasons we can sound "clear" even when we're coughing like crazy, is because there is so much mucus in there. It is so thick that air can't pass through it and thereby produce a crackle or a wheeze.

Coughing is a GOOD thing, especially if it's bringing stuff up. If it's really thick and coughing is wearing you out, maybe try an expectorant with a mucolytic. I've had good luck with Tussin CF as well as Mucinex.
