Indigestion/Heatburn/Acid Reflux and Oral Abx

Okay guys I have been taking Zyvox (600mg) and Cipro (750mg) BID for the past 2 weeks now - well 13 days. I have 1 more week left of each - along with taking TOBI. I have noticed that I have been having major issues with indigestion, acid reflux and heartburn in the past 2 weeks. It truly makes me sick to my stomach - and I am not talking regular nausea.

My mouth tastes funny at times and I just feel uncomfortable in my chest - my esophagus area - not my lungs. I am 99% sure this is related to the antibiotics, but don't know what to do about it.

I am already taking Nexium and have been since I was on IVs in Sept/Oct. I had the same problem then too - with the Zyvox (I was not on Cipro - just Zyvox, Maxipime and TOBI). I have tried chewing on those Maalox chewable acid reliever tablets and they only work for a little while. I was just wondering if anyone has noticed the same thing with taking Zyvox or Cipro and if you have what are you able to do to ease the discomfort. I want to come up with some type of "trick" to make the indigestion go away or at least more bearable before we leave for the cruise Thursday - since I will be taking these meds through the Cruise I am sure I will be dealing with this problem throughout the weekend.

Thanks for any advice you can offer. I am at my wits end in regards to this issue.

Thanks again guys and Happy New Year!
Lindsey

Hey Lindsey,

Zyvox for me is so hard for my body to tolerate... I felt wonderful when I was finished taking it. It did a great job clearing my infection., but I remember being home and doing home infusion with this med and feeling like totally dizzy, nausea, and in pain.

I have real bad reflux to begin with from the steroids I take so I can't if it was worse from the zyvox or not.

Hope you have an amazing and wonderful time on the cruise..

Love

It sounds like you are doing about all I would think of doing if I were in your situation. I don't have exprience with Zyvox, but Cipro always does a number on my stomach and digestive system (if you know what I mean).

Now, on to my "mother hen" mode.....will you be more sensitive to sunlight on the cruise because of either or both of these meds? I would just hate for your trip to be ruined due to a bad sunburn the first day so remember that extra sunscreen!!!

Have a <b>wonderful</b> time!!!<img src="i/expressions/sun.gif" border="0">

Lindsey,

Are you taking a probiotic? Your problems sound like (and knowing the chemical assault your body has been under) your healthy bacteria in your body is diminished.

Two good brands are Primal Defense by Garden of Life and PB8 by Nutrition Now.

I must share this shocking Cf story. One of the giftwrappers in my recent Borders fundraiser lost her 17 year old daughter with CF to a C-Diff infection. She was in the hospital for a routine tune up (her FEV1 was in the 90s) and her mother says because of the IV antibiotics she was on and not being on a probiotic to help the healthy bacteria stay in the gut she caught this nasty germ. She strongly feels that if the doctor had simply had her on Acidophilus she would be alive.

Lindsey,

Are you taking any probiotics? My daughter has been on Zyvox and she gets diahrea and it always messes with her digestion. It's harder to get exact info out of Maggie since she's only 4 but I always give her extra probiotics when she's on Zyvox. The one we've used in the past are Rhino Acidophilus by Nutrition Now or Culturelle. Check with your doc before taking them but they've definately kept Maggie's digestive system in check while on Zyvox. Also, make sure you eat yogurt with the good yogurt cultures in them.

Also, stay away from acidy foods, like orange juice or tomato sauce. Keeping your head propped at night can also help with reflux.

Lauren,

We must have been posting at the same time about probiotics! I worry alot about C.diff since I've seen that problem alot as a nurse in a hospital with lots of antibiotic use.
