Infant PFT's

My son was the third person in the state to do the infant PFTs. I believe he was about 13 months old when they did this. He was sedated for the process and they put him in this incubator like machine and put this vest around him, which would compress and then release at different intervals. I must admit I was nervous about the procedure, but it went smoothly. He did have to go back and do it about another month later because the sedation wore off before the docs were done doing all of the tests. I would say the worst part was trying to get him to take the sedative and then watching him come out of sedation. He was REALLY cranky and irritable! Good luck with it if you decide to pursue it. Our doc felt he got some very valuable information from doing it at that age.

Jodi, Mom to 6 y.o. Tucker (DDF508) and Macey 3 y.o. (no CF)

Our youngest had 2 infant PFT tests. The process was just as described in the previous posts. My husband was able to be in the room with her both times. Now that she is 18 months old the doctor said she is too big to do one at our next visit in Sept.

I would say that if you have the opportunity to have one done, do it. It let us and the doctor know how her lungs are doing and they are doing great!

My daughter had infant PFTs done when she was 15 months old. No big deal. They made her drowsy (she drank liquid med-it was almost 9 years ago, don't remember what the med was- and finally fell asleep) They put the little wrap on her and it would fill up with air, then quickly deflate-pushing the air out of her lungs. It took about an hour. No side effects. Hannah didn't have them done.

Ella just had her first infant PFT a couple of weeks ago. 17 months old. The Dr's said it went perfect! She did great. The Chloral Hydrate was a little tricky to give becasue it tastes bad and Ella only takes her medicine from people she knows so the nurse allowed me to admin it to her. It was weird. I mean she was acting so weird to me. She eventually fell asleep in the nurses arms and they had the Social Worker come in and talk to me the whole time, which was a good idea! I reccomend, not being in the room and having someone occupy you as the test is happening. We had a nutrition consultation at the same time of the test too! Really good idea.

After the test was done, Ella was so funny! She woke up smiling and mimicking everyword I said. I was also very scared to see her so sedated though. She was trying to move her body but she couldn't. She was making sudden movements as she was gaining control of her limbs. I almost droped her because she was flailing around so much. I also reccomend bring a comfy stroller to strap him in afterwords. It took a while to wear off too, about 6 hours! We had to pay really close attention to her the whole time. She was very irritable afterword too.

When they do the test they fill your child lungs with air based on a formula of how big they think your childs lungs actually are. There are a few risks with this. There are also risks with the Chloral Hydrate. I would ask the Dr's to explain these risks.
Hope this helps
