Infants and Enzymes

Hello
Does anyone have any possible suggestions or variations on how they give their infants enzymes?
Our youngest daughter, 4 mo, was just diagnosed with CF 3 weeks ago. We have been getting her enzymes in her but it is like pulling teeth trying to get her to swallow them in the applesauce. She will just cry and hold it in the back of her throat! She just cries and gets so worked up. She also does the same with any liquid medicine...
I know it is mostly a matter of her getting used to texture but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I make it a game with our daughter. She is now 3 1/2 months old and has been taking enzymes since she was 7 days old. I tell it is time for her "yum yums" and I make a big deal about her eating them. Her daddy tells her it is time for her appetizer and she pretends to try to bite his finger when he gives them to her.

I say make it fun for her to take them... if possible. But we just may be lucky to not have a 'picky eater' because she never minds taking meds either.

Good luck and welcome to the site.

DS did the same thing with pregestimil formula -- thru a fit, tried his best to escape. All the while the dietician was telling us his tastebuds weren't developed and he didn't know any better -- yeah, right!

DS hated the texture of applesauce -- we did better with baby bananas -- he also did okay with baby food pears & peaches, but I preferred the stickier consistency of the bananas in case my hand got bumped the little beads weren't flying all over the place.

Also initially, we used a tongue depresser, though you have to be careful not to bump the roof of her mouth. Just slide it in and out quickly and stick the bottle in just as fast.

With medicine, we used oral syringes and squirted them into his cheek; however, I seem to recall he HATED septra -- was a nasty fountain of medicine he'd spit at us. With adeks we initially mixed it up with a little juice in the nipple from a bottle and he would suck it down. Just don't mix the meds in with milk or she might develop an aversion to taking the formula.

I may be the odd one, but we didn't use applesauce or anything. It just didn't seem right to give my infant food - so I just opened the capsules and put the beads in his mouth, and squirted in some milk with them - I breastfeed, so most of the time he just latches on and sucks down the enzymes with the milk. I was assured by our dietician that this was OK - and it works for us. He's gained weight fine with this method (18 lbs at 6 months! WOO HOO!)

Now he knows when it's time to eat, he gets enzymes - it's so funny to watch him get excited as I open the capsules, because then he knows it's time to eat!
