Infertility Diagnosis #1, PCOS

Christian, PCOS is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Basically hormones are out of whack and sometimes there are cysts as well.

Jenny, I'm really glad they have a name! It's almost worse when they say "undiagnosed infertility" or something like that. I know many a women with PCOS that have gotten pregnant, so it IS possible. There are treatments! That's the encouraging news.

Good luck with the HSG and keep us posted. I hope your tubes are open! If you're able to take motrin before the HSG, I would. I took some and didn't have any cramping at all. I rested the rest of the day though. I felt a tiny crampy afterward and I wasn't sure "how bad" it was going to get. It turned out to be nothing I couldn't handle. But maybe that was the motrin talking. LOL!

Thanks, Girls!

Chris - PCOS means that I'm not ovulating or VERY RARELY. It is caused by hormones that are completely out of wack. This affect 1 out of 10 women and usually starts in your teens. Sometimes ovarian cysts are present on the ovaries as well. Usually, people with PCOS DO NOT get their period (at all) or their cycle is VERY IRREGULAR. Mine is VERY REGULAR but HEAVY. The heaviness is also a sign followed by longer periods.

I was thinking, "Gezzzz, I use to be on Prozac the week before and during my period...Maybe there was more to that..." I still have the most terrible mood swings. One day I want to rip Jake's head off, and the next, I'm kissing him endlessly and decide to "run off" some energy on the treadmill. I ran 2 miles on Thursday. Two weeks out of the month I'm like Mr. Jackl and Mr. Hyde. You just never know. I've gotten much better controlling it, but I still "blow up" over the dumbest things somedays...

I'm really hoping it's only PCOS. Like many stated, it is so easy to treat, usually. Sometimes Clomid (a medication that causes ovulation) is all you need. Sometimes you still need IUI, but there are lots of options. PCOS is common so there are so many methods of treatments. Watch me go from no children to twins. LOL!

If my tubes are an issue...That could be a much different story. With both factors, IVF may be the ONLY option. So I'm really hoping...

Honestly, my mind is kind of blown. For 19 months, I tried, and tried, and tried. Heck, I mostly likely wasn't going to get pregnant. I spent so much money on Robitussin, Mucinex, OV kits, and pregnancy tests for what??? Then, there was the whole emotional aspect of it (on top of the already messed up hormones). I'm so glad that Jake and I finally agreed to seek help - wish I did it sooner.

Oh....I forgot two things that really stuck out to me.

PCOS can cause diabetes. I have been "borderline diabetic" for years and years. Who ever heard of something like that? I have been on and off insulin pills like they are nothing. No diabetes treatment plans seem to work for me...All this time, my CF and diabetes doctor thought it was the CF. It may not be...My fertility doctor picked up on that immediately.

Also, PCOS causes high cholesterol and triclerides (sp?). Guess what??? I had my yearly bloodwork done last year (due again in November), and both values were high. How many CF patients have high cholesterol, really? Now wonder I'm 4'11", 118 pounds, and a little "plump". My fertility doctor picked up on that too immediately.
