Carly:

It continously amazes me, how little so many people in the medical profession know about CF. Make that nurse call your CF Doctor.

My hospital only changes them once every 3 days. They don't wash them and put them in plastic (that is just a breeding ground for bacteria!), but they are just as bad. They just take them and wrap a paper towel around the mouthpiece and leave it on my table. Supposedly they tested different ways and this was acceptable, but it doesn't seem right to me.
The nebulizer is still moist from the mediations within and the mouthpiece has been in my mouth and I've coughed on it. Sounds like a great way to reinfect myself.

I would "accidentally" throw them in the trash bin, that way they HAVE to give new ones. Especially being in a hospital that is more germ laden than your own home, clean cups are necessary. Sucks that you have to kick and scream for this to happen though.

Hugs,

Oh that is disgusting. We are taught to sterilize our equipment when we are home- which is a clean place, and the worst germs we are going to be exposed to are the ones we are accustomed to- and when at the hospital, a place teeming with multiresistant junk, they do this?! That is just unacceptable. I'd plaster this to the wall over the sink/next to the o2 on the wall where they hook you up: http://www.cff.org/UploadedFiles/LivingWithCF/StayingHealthy/Germs/StoppingTheSpread/Stopping-the-Spread-of-Germs.pdf Our hospital provides a fresh cup for every treatment. I'd keep right on throwing them away, telling them they are billing you for the ones you get anyway so what's a few more???
sorry... would have made the link live, but site doesn't like firefox I guess.

So sorry to hear this.

My hospital and RT department get LIVID at me. But I throw my non- PARI LC Plus nebs away after each and every treatment. And when the head of the RT department visited me to talk to me about $, I showed her the CF Foundation's recommendations for cleaning nebs. I also suggested that she do a culture of my used nebs after just a few hours of sitting idle to see what grows. She didn't take me up on it, but I know she would have seen my PA growing on the neb - why would I want that re-deposited back in my lungs?

My PARI LC Plus nebs, I put in a trash bag that no one knows about. Oooops, nurse, sorry, idk where it went. They have to bring me a new one. After a hospitalization I come home with a bunch of new nebs.

Good for you for saying something. YOU are the one that has to live with the hell of bacterial infections - not the nurse of RT or the hospital. So keep standing up for yourself!

My take on it is this. THEY are YOUR employee you are paying them. I would start politely with your cf doc asking for an order to be written, and if necessary send one neb out to an independent lab and ask people including the board of trustees who your attorney should contact after what bugs are I identified and who is responsible for the gross neglect in your care. Having said that I am completely against frivolous lawsuits, and a calm conversation with my CF team of "this is not acceptable in my home, as per your direction. So why is it acceptable here?" Usually fixes any problems I have during an admission.

sadly no, they work for your insurance company. The days of them working for you ended when people got credit cards and ditched their savings accounts.
