inhaled vanco

so doc just put me on vanco (to treat my staph) to do in my nebulizer. I started it up and instantly began gagging because of the lingering odor/taste. it's unbearable!!! I had to turn it off and go without it for the first night.

has anyone had this experience with aerosolized vanco? what do you guys do to combat the awful taste? I only have sidestream neb cups-would a different nebulizer help (like Pari neb)?

I really want to be compliant with this, but it's sooooo gross! I nearly threw my entire day's worth of food up and only had it running for a couple minutes. I even turned it off for a bit to try and gain back some composure and prepare myself for a second attempt--no suck luck, the second try was just as bad as the first.

any suggestions would be great!

I have never been on inhaled vanco... however, I have been on one nebulized med that tasted SO BAD my nurse recommended I put a mint in my mouth while I do it... It actually helped!!

Try sucking on a jolly rancher or some type of hard candy while youre doing it. I know it tastes disgusting!!! I call it Vancohorrible!

I would actually probably ask for a PiCC line or something if I had to be on vanco (I got it on all my hospital stays so far). That way you can just do it through IV and not have to worry about the taste.

Is the inhaled Vanco used for maintenance of MRSA like Tobi/Colistin/Cayston are for PA? It doesn't seem like it's used very commonly.
