inhaler Spacers

I just got a spacer for my albuterol inhaler. It seems to be working better now. I feel better longer and it really loosens up my cough. I can't believe it made this much difference.

It prevents the medicine from being released too fast. It's an oval shaped chamber that attaches to the mouthpiece of the inhaler and collects more of the medicine so you can inhale it slower. The quick release of the albuterol without the spacer, I guess causes you to lose some of its effectiveness.

i used it when i was younger, then stopped, and now i use it again whenever its convienant... i like it though! it makes me feel better faster, longer, and i don't get the jitters (which i normally get)! its just big so i don't bring it to sports and other things. but using it at home is nice

The majority of people (upwards of 90%) don't use their MDI's correctly. What does that mean? You're wasting your time and money cuz you're not getting the max amount of meds into your lungs.

I use a spacer with my Flovent. I use the PARI Vortex.... it works great and is pretty idiot proof.

FYI....MDI's shoot out the medicine twice as fast as most of us can inhale, so half of the medicine hits the back of your throat and tongue and never reached your lungs. With a spacer that employees a valve system the medicine is suspended in the chamber and you can get 35% more medicine. The incident of mouth/throat irritation is also decreased when using a spacer because of the same reason.

Not to mention... that carrying around an areochamber in your pocket(for males) can be mighty impressive to women.

We used the neb for Faith's albuterol. Dr. gave us the aerochamber to use, which was great because it saved her so much time especially in the morning and for after school activities. However, when her PFT's went down a few month's ago, they put us back on the neb. My guess is that it wasn't getting into her lungs the right way. My hope is that she'll get her PFT's back up and maybe go back to the chamber using it only in the morning.

I have a chamber laying around someplace that hasn't been used for years.
How is a good way to wash it? Just like you would nebulizers?
