insensitive to tobramycin?!

I came in fora tuneup today and we had begun the regular routine, minus IV tobra. I asked the nurse why it wasn't ordered and she went to find out. Turns out my culture came back with psuedo that isinsensitive to tobra so the dr didn't write orders for it. This is a new dr that I've only been seeing for about 2 weeks now so I have no idea what he is going to want to do. Does anyone have some experience with this? I can assume that means tobi is useless as well? (that would go a long ways to explaining why I'm back in here so soon) What can I expect with this? what is the replacement for tobi (is there one?) This may be a dumb question but is there any regaining sensitivities to the tobi? I will see the on-call tomorrow and will talk to him when he does rounds, but I've never even met the dr that is on call this weekend. I must say, in general this hospitalization has been less than fun so far

I haven't been sensitive to IV tobra in years but it still gets ordered for me because I think the doc said that even though the culture says I'm resistant to it, it still helps to weaken the pseudomonas.

I'm in your boat as well. Was on TOBI for many, many years than came up with pseudo, so the TOBI had to go. Now I'm on Cayston and I love it so much. My PFT's went way, way up (back to my "old" baseline of 90s, which I haven't been at in a few years). If it's an option, ask your doctor about starting Cayston. I don't know what the status of the shortage is right now, but it's good to get the ball rolling on stuff like that.

So bizarre - I can't see the reply that I made on this thread a few days ago.

You may be able change your sensitivities to abx - you can read about my experience here:

hello there! so my cultures recently have been resistant to tobramycin as well. i asked why i was still put on tobramycin iv after seein that i was not sensitive to it, and my nurse told me that they cant assumes that all my bugs are not sensitive. And that because my cultures were sinsitive last year to tobramycin that there were prob still bugs that arestill benefitting from thetobramycin (that werent sampled in my culture that they tested&nbsp<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
but with the tobramycin not seeming to help you, you may indeed be completely resistant and not sensitive. does the tobi neb help you at all?
