Insurance for Orkambi (GA)

Any Georgia residents on Orkambi via insurance? I am looking to sign up for Obamacare in a few months, so any experiences (bad/good) with GA carriers would be super helpful. Thanks!

I wonder if Vertex's patient assistance folks would have that info? As of now, only a few have adopted "policies" on coverage, so it might be that things change after you sign up, but if any have already adopted a policy, I bet Vertex would know. Good luck.

Yea. I called the lovely Vertex GPS rep who couldn't/wouldn't answer anything. I believe on insurance he said, "That's changing all the time/varies, so I can't really comment or recommend anything...".

BTW: So are many carriers not covering Orkambi yet? If so, how on earth will the precious Vertex/vampire shareholders recoup that R&D + insane profit?

Sorry if I seem perturbed, but I think these guys, along with Mr. 5,000% increase Hedge fund twerp guy, should be ashamed of the prices they demand for potentially life saving medicines. Its not right, dammit. Case in point. I went to Belgium for a vacation. Forgot my Creon at home. Walked RIGHT into a cornerstore pharmacy, asked about Creon on a whim, got 2 bottles with NO PRESCRIPTION for like 35 bucks a bottle. US cost w/out insurance? 1200.00. And we both know that at 35.00, that pharmacy is making money AND Abbott Pharma-terrorists were still making money as well. Don't give me that R&D garbage. They have a guaranteed user base (CF for life!) for the entirety of the current and future CF worldwide population. Their great grandkids are already going to be millionaires. US healthcare is the most shameful exhibition of greed/exploitation on the planet. Soapbox over.

I wonder if you couldn't go onto the website for the major insurance companies in your state and see if Orkambi has been added to their formulary drug listing. I check the website for ds' insurance prior to getting a script and was surprised it was listed as a specialty drug. That's not to say they didn't give us trouble when we finally got the script filled as they wanted us to use their specialty mail order pharmacy, which is NOT one of the 9 Vertex permitted ones.

No, I'm in a different state. I ended up having to go thru the Vertex assistance program and they did the legwork. Ended up with a $15 copay, but initially our insurance indicated we'd have to come up with half the cost as they considered it nonformulary.

Agree the cost of this drug is unsustainable for insurance companies. I might benefit from this drug but some what concerned about what it would do for my insurance plan. I am insured through my former employer which self insures which has about 3K employees. I understand there is cost with R&D but this is ridiculous. How can the CEO sleep at night knowing that he is potentially keeping this drug out of the hands of patients that need Orkambi. The cost of insurance premiums is determined by the COST of each members claims. Between Cayston every other month and Pulmozyme daily and Creon Daily, cost to my insurance company over 95K a yr. plus other medication that I take these are just the big ticket items. We the CF patients need cost consideration with this drug please!
