Insurance

I am 18 years old, about to turn 19, and I thought my parents purchased health insurance for life for me when I was born, and then was DX with CF a few years later. I just found out a few days ago this was not the case, my dad worked for United and they have a family health care program that will cover me until I turn 21. That is only 2 years away and I figure I should start planning ahead. Is there any possible way to get health insurance with CF? if so would it be worth the price? Will jobs that offer health insurance turn me down because of my condition? Do I need to get a job that offers health insurance?

I am just wondering what CF adults are doing, and what they have found works best so that I will know what todo and not go broke paying for medicines, thanks.

You cannot get health insurance by yourself (solo plan) with a pre-existing condition.

You can always get health insurance through an employer as long as they offer it. THat's called group insurance and you can never be excluded to do a pre-existing condition.

Make sure you get a job with health insurance. Big companies tend to offer the best insurance (lowest co-pay, lowest out of pocket cost, etc).

It can be done, for sure. It might take some work to find the right employer, but it definately can be done

Do you plan to or are you in college? With the plan my mom has, I am able to stay on her insurance as long as I'm a student. That may buy you a few extra years.

Hi, I worked for a very large company. They new I had cf. My job was not one of the highest paying there but I got the best health ins. offered. Also, they have disability ins. coverage and long term disab. coverage. Short term, I was pd. a % of my weekly pay. Just like anyone else I went and had a baby and everything was covered also staying home for a few months. I went back to work, but the Dr. said after a few months that it would be a good Idea to become permanatly disabled if I could do it. My life style would run me down even befor the baby and now with her and my life of "normalsy" and people who could not possibly miss work due to the flu, I was getting colds all the time. I left and got all my insurance benefits for me and my daughter, (I put her on my policy after her birth. My hubbys was not as good.) and some of my income per month.

Any way get into a big company!! If you get to pick benefits that have part of it come out of your pay, for the best policy, then do it. When you leave they have to give it to you for ever!!! Disabled people have a lot of rights when it comes to that stuff. look into it discreatly by reading that big book on benefits that you get when you are hired.
