Hello, my name is Samantha and I am in respiratory therapy school. I am writing a paper on cystic fibrosis (my cousin has CF). I am reading all these websites about facts and statistics about the disease, but I really want to understand from real people who have CF what it is like to live each day emotionally, physically and mentally? Does is effect dating? School? sports? how does it effect your family, friends?
If you would like to write back, I would love to get a better understanding.Samantha

I'm not sure what your paper needs to be on, but might I suggest doing it on hypertonic saline? I had a very interesting conversation with an RT once about whether the increase in PFT's found in surfers (which initially lead to the study of HTS in CF) was from the exercise of surfing or the inhalation of a hypertonic solution.

It's been my experience that HTS is a good agent for sputum induction and not much else. This particular RT agreed with me. I think that would make for a very interesting paper.

Havoc. The idea for HTS has been around for a long time I think. My doc had me on a version of it in the early 1980's. When was the surfer idea/connection first published? Maybe she was just ahead of her time. : )

Yeah, the studies were done later than the 80's. I just feel that HTS is crap. I think the reason surfers had higher PFTs was the exercise and not the hypertonic solution.

HTS is a great induction agent, but as far as pulling more water into the mucus and thinning it, crap. That's if you don't see a dive in pulmonary function from bronchospasm.

Are you looking to talk to / interview different individuals? I'm a 19 year old female college student. My CF is relatively mild (I've actually never been hospitalized specifically for CF and have never had a problem keeping my weight up…in fact, at one point it was the opposite), but I do daily therapies and would be happy to answer some questions if you'd like.

Samantha, I think you'd get a better response if you asked to interview people over the phone. Your questions are quite broad, one could type for a loooooooooooooong time trying to answer them. Or you could come up with a survey, ask people to fill it out. That is a little less daunting.

I agree with MOMTO2.
Samantha, make a simple survey for people to fill out. It's kind of overwhelming to ask someone to sum up their life in a paragraph; and even if they did-I doubt the info you get would be the kind of help you were looking for.

Good luck. I'll be checking back to see your survey

A survey is definitely a good idea! I think the responses you'd get w/out one are going to be all over the place. It's easier to respond to very specific questions.
