nothing like some good old discrimination.

i think we should start calculating the total gov't tax dollars that are distributed to the decay of western society who drain america of its social programs, find out what they all have most in common (race, eye color, address, income, race, hair color) and then start to do prenatal counseling for those fetuses who are most likely to drain us of our social programs. but that would be racism, no?

Interesting. That's all I have to say. I'm not sure if I necessarily liked OR disliked it, it was just... interesting.

Hardly a credible source of information. I don't see the link between the new health plan and the discrimation you are claiming.

well, this is an opinion piece -- not fact. she's selectively quoting. for example, of course parents who receive genetic counseling re: disease like CF are told to consider "resources." imagine bringing a CF child into a family with little-to-no income, no insurance, etc. if the family doesn't have the resources to care for a special needs child than other options need to be considered. ironically, obama's healthcare plan will likely make that LESS of an issue.

genetic counseling and pre-natal testing for diseases are not new phenomenons. blaming obama or the new healthcare legislation for these things is ridiculous. in fact, genetic counseling is often very helpful in preparing a family to raise a child with a disease like CF. i know many genetic counselors, some of whom work for public institutions, and they are not there to counsel abortion for special needs kids. they are there to help the family come to right choice for THEM, and to educate the family as to their options with regard to public works programs, etc.

to be honest, i thought the "article" (i would call it an op-ed instead) was simply a biased woman voicing her worst-case scenario fears with little or no "evidence" to back up her words. i wasn't offended, but i don't find that sort of thing very useful (from either side of the political spectrum). on the other hand, i didn't like your immediate jump to claiming that minorities are a drain on society (insinuating that if we singled out groups that were a drain on public programs it would be racism). not asking for you to take it back, by any means, but i would like to state for the record that i for one am proud to live in a society advanced enough to recognize that we need to take care of all our citizens -- including helping them out when needed.

oh, and CF typically has a much faster approval rate for social assistance applications than many other diseases. so far, the government has shown ZERO signs of discriminating against CF when it comes to allocating public assistance resources, so far as i can tell.

"Now that Obamacare has passed, will prenatal genetic tests eventually move from being voluntary to mandatory, in the name of cost-savings? Down the road, will abortions be encouraged by the state or even forced on those children who will have special needs or will need life-long medical care?"

Lots of speculation, not really much evidence. Personally, in the country we live in I think it is a little far-fetched to believe that the goverment can FORCE you to get an abortion if you don't want it. Even the pro-abortion supporters use the freedom of choice laws, which has worked for them so far.

I think we should just focus on the now rather than trying to predict the future.

i am taking the issue to the extreme, i admit. i like to hear what people have to say because sometimes even the most extreme 'presumptions' about how legislation 'may' impact the CF community can be discussed openly with intelligent humans, as it is here. (thank you for the thoughful responses by the way)

I do agree we should help out those in need as a community when the time comes for ANYONE to need it. I for one receive benefits so I am in no means against it. There is a difference too between helping someone in need due to unfortunate circumstances VS allowing someone to NOT help themselves get to a better place and continue to be dependendent upon society for their continuous reproductive patterns or 'inablity' to get up for work...

I don't think the gov't is being 'stiff' with the assistance to CF people either (there are exceptions of course)...but the article is saying that gov't is looking ahead and deciding how best to 'deal' with 'our' kind of people. I don't think the article is far off. I think that in time, there will be a push for people to 'genetically select' healthy offspring and the government will encourage it or force someone to take the test, 'just to see what it says'.

I used to be very proud of our country. And its not simply changed since B.O. took office. I believe the decline started a long time ago. Too much 'assistance' and 'help' to those who need to help themselves. We as Americans have found WAY too many excuses for poor behavior. I read today that there is actually a 'genetic link' found in those who are unfaithful to their spouses. Pretty soon there will be a certified health condition for those who are afraid to hear the alarm clock go off in the morning.....

my apologies if you believe this to be off topic or irrelevant to the CF community

I started not being proud of our government when Regan started putting puppet leaders in other country's for our "gain". Start getting Your news from more than one place. Think for Yourself, not for Fox news and the fear that they are putting into peoples heads.
