I get emails from Medscape one recently published was study done on COPD patient and singing improving their PFT's and decreasing fatigue. Not sure how to paste it at this site but the study had patients do breathing exersizes and sing for 5 minutes a day and noted a positive difference in PFT's. Thinking this could translate through to CF as well.

Singing definitely helps me! Unfortunately, I suck at it (seriously), so I only do it when I'm alone in the car <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"> . However, if I have a week where I am running around almost everyday by myself, my lungs feel really good.

In the study, participants were given breathing exersizes and vocal techniques and also told to sing 5 minutes a day. Something about the way you use different muscles when you sing helps decrease fatigue and increase PFT. My daughter loves to sing, I love to sing in the car too(I am not good) but Maggie IS! Also, singing seems to lift your spirit which can also help.

I don't know about singing personally but I can definitely say this works with playing an instrument. I was in band and marching band in jr high and high school and I had great pfts, when I graduated and stopped playing my pfts really started to drop

Our ENT recommended DS play a wind instrument because he said it strengthens the lungs. He said his CF patients that play wind instruments stay healthier longer. (Don't know if that's really true, just what he told us.)
