Is it possible that I have CF? What do you think? (please answer) :)

Hey all! I posted this in the diagnosis section and got one response, but I would like to hear from more people if I can!...

So I have been to the doctor recently for another cold that turned into bronchitis, and they think it ended up turning into pnemonia. They also said they think I may have some alleriges and/or asthma. My question is do you think it would be worthwhile to get tested for CF?

Here's some background..

Since I was little I would get colds that always turned into at least 3 week long mucus producing coughs. It has continually gotten worse as I have gotten older, but I have always seemed to have a cough that doesn't always produce mucus, but sometimes does. I usually get these colds that start out not too bad and I think they are going to go away, and then they start to turn into bronchitis. At least 2-3 times a year I end up having to go to the doctor multiple times because they tell me it should go away in a few days, and it just gets worse, so I go in, and they finally tell me I have bronchitis or pnemonia and give me stuff for that. The meds they give me seem to help, but as soon as I am off them the cough continues to linger and I still produce mucus. The longest ammount of time I remember having really bad coughs that produced mucus was about 7-8 months. The doctor said he thought I just kept getting colds that would turn into bronchitis.

Also, since I was about 12, I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. Basically I have constipation, and then sometimes diarhea Since I was little, I have always had stamach aches and pains in my bowels. I have been to the ER multiple times for these pains along with my chest cavity hurting. Sometimes my back feels like there is a knife being pushed through it when I breath.

I told my doctor that I seem to cough pretty regularly and that sometimes it produces mucus, but not all the time. She thinks that I am either allergic to something or have asthma or both. I also told her about my history of colds turning into bronchitis and IBS, and my chest cavity hurting a lot. She didn't really have anything to say to that. I get the feeling that she thinks I am making it up or that it is all in my head.

Sorry, this has gotten so long! So anyway, I had someone tell me that it is possible that I could have a mild form of CF and that I should get tested. I do want help with my health and knowing what I can do to get better, but I don't want to go get all these tests done unless there is a probability that they could give positive results. I am 24 years old, and have had these previously stated problems since I was a kid, but CF has never been brought up. Do you think it would be worth it to get tested or that I have any of the symptoms that would point to me having it? Any and all insight is appreciated!!

Enjoy! Ü

I would get tested. That way you would know one way or the other. You could rule out CF, or if you have it you could start on your path to better health. Just my thought.

Yeah, go get tested, bottom line. And theres a specific test you want, which you can ask for. When you go to get tested for Cf, they are looking for copies of cf genes, called mutations. There are thousands of different mutations.
Each cf patient has 2 mutations, one from mom and one from dad.
Some mutations are very common and easy to identify. Some mutations are rarer. Oftentimes, when someone is tested they will routinely be given the test that checks for only 100 or so of the most common mutations.
This test is more inexpensive, and insurance covers it easily. The problem is that very often, it will miss mutations that could actually be present in your body. So a person gets a false negative when they actually have cf, or are carriers.
Ask for the test that tests for over 1000 mutations. (can't remember the lab name, but its widely known in the cf world and someone here will probably mention it)
Wish you the best.
