Hi! I have a 2 1/2 year old son with cf. We are getting ready to paint the inside of our house so that we can put it up for sale. Does anyone know if it is o.k. for him to be in the house while we are painting? And if not then how long does he need to stay out of the house after we are finished painting? That would not be really practical since I have noone to watch him but as always his health comes first. Thanks!

It depends on the type of paint. We did downstairs this year & the upstairs last year. I dont recall which kind is what we used, but I do know one has terrible fumes & that is the one you did NOT want. The others have a slight odor, but I was able to do some actually painting & it didnt bother me. I want to say acrylic is what NOT to use.....the hardware or home center you get the paint from can tell you!

House paints are pretty complex. Usually latex based paints (water soluable are less toxic than oil or alkyd paint. Here's a link to an article:

Like Melissa said, ask the person in the paint dept. for advice.

I painted the basement a few months ago-dumb idea. B/c it was a basement, there was no ventilation. Of course, being 24 that may affect me more than a 2.5 yr old-they can handle more usually. My parents always took care of the painting and spackling when I was home.
So make sure that even though its winter all the windows are open and you have fans running.
Happy painting!

There are low VOC and no VOC paints available. No VOC paints are the safest and are recommended for people with reactive lung diseases like asthma. ICI paints has one called Lifemaster 2000.
