I don't believe this is correct. It's not their money/disability/work credit. It's YOURS. When I lived with my parents when I was approved and started getting payments, my SSDI was deposited into MY bank account. If your parents wanted to apply for food stamps or something, then I think your SSDI may interfere because it's a source of income; same goes for their income if YOU were to apply for food stamps while living with them. I think the only reason an SSDI check would go to parents is if you weren't 18 and lived with them. I could be wrong, but your parents getting your SSDI check simply because you live with them doesn't sound right.

This is interesting...the lady at my SSI ofice told me if i was not giving my dad my ssdi check as its my portion of the bills?...

This def dont make sense to me as i always thought it was your work credit its nothing to do with what 1/3 of the bills come to and what i get paid is my 1/3 and thats why my dad has to have it?..im def not understanding it at all!

Hopefully i get alot more answers on here..I do remember the lady at the SSI offcie telling me I could get in alot of trouble if i was not giving my dad my ssdi money and that if they were to get suspicious then theyd start asking for proof of reciepts?

But i do also know ssdi is based off what i had worked..so how is that anything to do with 1/3 of the household bills?

ughh so confusing lol

That does sound odd...both of my kids drew off of my SSDI, it was deposited into my account but it was for them. Once I had to provide receipts proving that I was indeed providing for them with that money but that's all. My daughter doesn't anymore as she is nearly 19, my son still does at 17. But it is off of MY SSDI though....as far as I understand, it is your money if you get SSI or SSDI. If it is SSI, then income will play a part, maybe that is what they mean? I would get it cleared up either way so you know what to expect.
Good luck

It sounds like the lady is getting SSI and SSDI confused. When you recieve SSI, and living with your parents yes you are supposed to contribute to bills. It's one reason they give it to you. Other wise if they don't think you are paying a "fair share" in contributing to the bills, they can take away a portion of the SSI.

I understand if the lady is saying your SSDI is supposed to go towards bills, because it is. But are they telling you the check will be in your dad's name? Or that you have to show proof of helping with bills? But regardless the amount of SSDI is not contingent on what you give to bills, it's how much you have worked in the past.

Depending on how your parents feel about it. You can always go get those receipt books from any store, like wal mart or target..and start making a monthly receipt. Saying you have paid your parents. Whether you actually do or not is up to you. Your parents could take that money and turn around and give it back in food or whatever else you need anyway...so you can do that or just keep it. Plus it will help them out a tad bit with other bills if need be. If you feel this is to "Crooked", then do something at the house as payment so you can keep that portion. Like extra chores or something. Something that you can do when you feel well.

Are you getting both SSDI and SSI?...I don't know how common that is but I have heard of some people getting both...and that would make more sense as to why the lady was saying you had to give a portion of your check to your father. Or are you drawing SSDI from your fathers work history?

SSDI is based on your work history. It does not have anything to do with other members of your households income. SSI is a type of welfare income for those people who do not have enough work credits in. SSI would be based on the households income up because they would take the bills of the house in split them by the number of adults in the house.

It seems to me that you are talking about SSI rather then SSDI

I can give you some info, but I have questions first.
1. Are you recieving SSDI based on YOUR Previous work history?

If not, 2. Are you recieving SSDI based on your FATHER's retirement benefits.

3. Are you sure that you are recieving SSDI and NOT SSI?
