Is there a need?

I agree it sounds like a great idea. Support (monetary or otherwise) for families is something lacking from our culture in general. I think many CF families can definately use the extra assistince and that the really great thing about your idea is that it not only encourages activities that our good for CFer's health but also integrates health into with normal, fun activities. Wonderful idea!

This is a very big need. We lost our daughter to Cystic Fibrosis April of 2005 at 23 years old. We formed The Cody Dieruf Benefit Foundation in her name to carry on her legacy and to raise funds to help famlies with financial and emotional help, and with educational and cultural opportunities. This is a non profit organization and it takes a lot of work. If you need any input please feel free to email me at gdieruf@yahoo.com

I think that would be great. My girls would love to be in gymnastics right now but I can't afford it. I'm sure there are other things they would like to do too, but I can't afford any of it.

I would only be into the idea if it didn't just include sports. Dancing, voice training (improves lung function), music...I wouldn't be into donating for just sports.

Also, I like the idea more of taking kids on hikes and backpacking, but you can't have Cf kids together soooooo, I don't know. I think Cf families might be a lot more wiling to take from the foundation than donate to it.

If you really want to do this, then ya! more power to you, but I don't want you to be disappointed, and just voicing my concerns.

I think it is a wonderful idea and I believe Amy's concern could be covered by verification from the organization or receipt. I also like what Allie is saying since many activities can increase lung capacity and create physical health. I would like the definition of "activities" to include organized sports (soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming, track ect), dance, Qigong (studies demonstrate increases lung capacity), yoga and other body work, and outdoorsmanship (hiking, biking, skiing, ect).

We are fortunate to live in a city where we have a huge recreation center and what is called the MetroParks (huge preserved park system). They offer many discounted classes and we take ice skating for $20 for 1 hour classes (unheard of). However, it would be neat to have a non-profit cover the expense of joining -- the family membership is $300/annually which is hard for some families I'm sure.

Best of luck to you...keep massaging the idea and get some great non-profit people on your side to start it up and get your funding.

Warmly,

ABSOLUTELY, these things are vital both because of the aerobic exercies that they provide, but also for the comradere and social skills that develop as a result of involvement in these activities.

I know when Mark was younger, his parents, actually his mom (dad left them) had NO money, and he was only lucky enough to be able to participate in soccer because the school district picked up some of the fee and his big brother ("big brother" program, not his real big brother) picked up the rest. OTherwise, as you said, it would have been nixed.

I think it's a wonderful idea. My old CF Association has a 'Physical Subsidies Program' which offers $150 per year towards the cost of physical activities or equipment. My parents used it to buy a trampoline when I was younger, and I put it towards a gym membership when I was older. As far as I remember, you had to pay out of your own pocket, but was reimbursed if you produced a receipt.

We have a program like that through our cf foundation. It includes gym memberships, sports club ect.. and I'm sure there are heaps of official forms to fill out. I havn't used it though as I found out about it too late. Kj only uses our gym equipment at home. But we do have a reimbursement scheme where you can get 30% of costs back out of $300.00 for anything cf prescribed.

So it can work and its good for kids/adults with cf to participate in sport. Most of the time we are shelling out our money on food and meds and bills and can't afford the sports stuff.

I wish you luck with your endeavour!! <img src="">
