I am 16 and for as long as I can remember, my legs cramp all the time. When I was younger I used to wake up during the night all the time with leg cramps and my mother would give me ibuproven or something and rub my legs. They still cramp all the time. I have heard that the leg cramps have something to do with our salt. I was just wondering if anyone else hase this problem.

Low potassium levels can also cause leg cramps. Bananas are high in potassium. I would make sure you let your Dr. know...Dea

its usually got something to do with the salts/minerals in your body. i once had very bad cramps and they said i had very low magnesium levels. if your diabetic you can get cramps if your sugars arent under control.

I don't get actual cramps, but when I am not feeling well, need IV's, etc. I get really achy - especially my legs. I actually take Ibuprofen twice a day every day for overall achiness, but when I'm sick even that doesn't do the trick. I usually have to take hot showers and that usually helps. I always assumed this was caused by poor circulation, but I really don't know. Martha 29, CF

A good complete multi-vitamin that is well-balanced with minerals and herbs and easy to digest (something like Reliv) can help with achiness. I seem to experience the achiness (my legs are my main problem as well) less when my nutrition is complete. When you do get a leg cramp, try pulling your toes upward - to strech your muscle. I also get achier (is that a word?) when I am sleep-deprived. HollyCatheryn

When I was a teenager, I got terrible leg cramps and toe cramps nightly. I found the best way to help this was by making sure my diet was good (I began taking protein shakes that had lots of vitamins and for some reason it helped), and before bed, I'd rub my calves and feet. I'd really dig my fingers into the muscles to get the acid build up out of them - this seemed to get rid of the cramps. Just be sure to drink a bottle of water when you do this to flush your system of the acid (you should drink water after any sort of massage, otherwise you can feel sick because the acid that's been released from your muscles sits in your system for awhile). Also - staying well hydrated gets rid of cramping because it will more easily flush your muscles of acid build up.Piper

My daughter is 4 and suffers from leg cramps as well. She wakes up from her sleep with what she calls knee pains. I asked about it at the CF clinic and they said many cfers get joint pain but they are not sure what causes it. I'm not sure now if it is a leg cramp or a joint pain. Interesting......Heather (mom to Ashley)

I don't get leg cramps, but I do get that joint pain, especially in my knees and hips. I also get them mostly in the middle of the night, and it's very hard to go back asleep with my legs hurting like that. For me, it happens when my CF is flaring up and its time to go on some antibiotics. Just thought I'd share

22/f/cf/double lung transplant i still get pains in my legs and joints alot, but i don't drink enough water so that could be something to do with it. i've been getting the pains since i was little. i never figured it out about what causes it. i know one time my little brother used to have the same pains but his was caused by not enough milk. i drink alot of milk so that wasn't the same for me.
