Is this just an enzyme issue?

DS has been doing great for the past year or two on his Creon-12. He is always at the max dose and is also on Prevacid to help with the enzymes.

Yesterday he started having greasy stools to the point where he couldn't hold it. Last night he complained of a tummy-ache and had more grease and then today he had the same but also didn't want to eat.

I suppose I always thought that the tummy-aches they got with greasy stools was a more crampy feeling and not so much that he wouldn't want to eat. Has anyone else had this happen? Also, if he is malabsorbing so much wouldn't he be more hungry?

Obviously I need to figure this enzyme thing out and get him back to normal but I just want to make sure that this is a normal thing and not something separate that I should worry about. He was also given four shots at the doctors office on Wednesday so I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with any of this but I'm thinking not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If this just happened out of the blue yesterday after doing fine for a long time... is there a possibility he forgot his enzymes with a large meal at some point or if he's at daycare/babysitters or preschool, isn't getting as many as he is supposed to there when he eats? Or that he's getting sick? I would consider factors like that before necessarily thinking the enzymes suddenly weren't working.

Long-term malabsorption yes is often associated with a greater appetite, but I am not surprised that a sudden onset of stomachaches is leaving your son not wanting to eat. He may also be feeling gassy, bloated, etc and that also can be affecting appetite. I hope you can figure out what is behind this so it can be fixed and get him feeling better soon!

I'm sorry he's going through this... doesn't sound like fun at all. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Do you think he could be constipated or have meconium equivilant? When DS was a baby and would get constipated he'd still be stooling -- albeit very loose and his feeding would decrease, he'd be fussier. How's his tummy -- is it very distended, harder and rounder?

Good point Liza! Didn't even think of that and I should have, since Emily has experienced a couple blockages that have resulted in loss of appetite, stomachaches, etc. Her tummy got really big- she looked almost pregnant. She also was still passing stool before we cleaned her out, just in small amounts. We see some really awful looking stool w/ blockages- due to there being a lot of mucus for whatever reason when she gets blocked up, her stool is exceptionally slimy.

There is a chance that he did not get his enzymes for maybe a snack. Also, he's a huge banana eater and I never give him enzymes with them but he has been eating like two per sitting... wondering if that alone could cause this? It's just so strange how much and how out of the blue it is. When he has had grease before it started so much slower.

Liza - he hasn't really been fussy, just fussy about eating really and last night he refused to sleep in his own bed. I will check his belly in the morning.

I don't think bananas would make a difference in terms of not having enzymes. And when DS has missed a dose of enzymes with a snack, I've noticed looser stools, but not any stomach discomfort.

DD used to have horrible stools with Creon 10 but when she started Creon 12 things changed a lot for the better. She has been constipated a few times though. The most recent constipation she went 5 days without stooling. Belly aches used to happen every day with Creon 10. What I can think about Parker is that if he goes to Daycare maybe they forgot to give him his enzymes. Last week my DD teachers forgot to give her the enzymes with her afternoon drink (Carnation).
