Is this normal at a yearly checkup?

My daughter had her yearly checkup today with a different doctor than her usual CF doctor and he did something in the exam which we had not seen before and I wanted to get some feedback on whether this was unusual or normal and they had just not done it before. The doctor checked her anus much the same as her pediatrician had done in her well baby checkups when she was younger. Has anyone experienced this with a 5 year old at their CF checkups? We are a little uneasy about this and would appreciate any feedback on the subject.

Did the doctor explain why they did so? I would call this "normal" only if your daughter has a history of prolapse. That's it. No other reason. Even at that, the doctor should trust a parent's word that things are normal. I don't want to further add to your discomfort, but this doesn't sit right with me....

This has never happened at our annual appt. But my daughter is pancreatic sufficient and has no history of related issues -- so if there was an issue in the past, this might make sense.

I seem to remember she had recent issues with pretty severe constipation~ was prolapse or any other physical symptom ever a concern? Has she ever had blood in her stool? I would definitely ask why this was done.

Emily has needed a couple rather thorough internal exams done (more than just a quick check) but they were done at a ped surgeon's office and we knew exactly why they were being done. They've never checked that at a cf appt, even with her hx of prolapse.

My daughter had a rectal exam with the gastroenterologist before she was diagnosed with CF. They have never checked that at the CF clinic.

Our DD had a rectal prolapse before dx at age 3. The only time a rectal exam has been done was right after the prolapse, at the pediatrician's. This was still before the CF dx.

There has never been a rectal exam done at any of the CF visits. When we took her to a pediatric GI for stomach aches at age 6, it was just abdominal palpitations (he did refer us for a gastrografin enema procedure).

So I would call and ask the purpose of the exam. You have the right to understand their reason for everything. Setting aside your uneasiness, what if there is a medical reason they checked, and it is something you could also be monitoring?

I am not sure it is abnormal to check, Prolapse is something that can be a problem for a child especially with a pancreatic insufficient child.

As long as you were in the room when he did it, I don't see the problem. Each doctor has a different way of assessing a child and that may have been his, espcially if he was not a normal CF doctor.

You can always feel free to ask questions though. I would, but I would not be overly alarmed especially if he was just looking. Most parents would know if their child had a prolapse but you would be surprised at the ones who do not.

Hope you get some ease soon
