Is this normal at a yearly checkup?

I am not sure it is abnormal to check, Prolapse is something that can be a problem for a child especially with a pancreatic insufficient child.

As long as you were in the room when he did it, I don't see the problem. Each doctor has a different way of assessing a child and that may have been his, espcially if he was not a normal CF doctor.

You can always feel free to ask questions though. I would, but I would not be overly alarmed especially if he was just looking. Most parents would know if their child had a prolapse but you would be surprised at the ones who do not.

Hope you get some ease soon

My dd is also PS and has never had any issues and they did check her anus at the annual appt. I did not ask why but assumed it was standard.
I understand your uneasiness though.

For the last 2 years we've seen another doctor but he was out of town. He never checked her bottoms at all. DD had rectal prolapses but before she was diagnosed and we went to a GI for that. After she was diagnosed they sent us to the CF Center and they never checked her bottom until now. We were present while he was checking everything, just the fact he looked makes me uneasy. I wasn't expecting that. I told my husband that I feel more upset because we didn't question anything. It didn't cross our minds to question the doctor about that. Until me got home and started thinking about it. We spent 3 hours in the room one person after another. I need to clarify that it was a quick check. It was like seconds after he checked nose, mouth ears, lungs, heart etc. I remember that at the begining I mention that DD had been constipated weeks ago but she had been constipated before and we mentioned this to our regular doctor and he never checked her bottoms. It helps a lot to hear all your experiences. We are still trying to figure out how to address this situation. Thanks a lot.

OK- it might be part of HIS routine care when he sees hx of prolapse and then recent constipation to include that as part of his exam. It's unfortunate that he didn't tell you- if he does it regularly with his other patients, they likely know to expect it but that doesn't help those that don't know him well. If you have to talk to her nurse inbetween clinic appts (i.e. to refill a script or something) you can always ask HER and see if she knows 'I've been curious ever since our last clinic; Dr. A has never done this, but Dr. B did a rectal exam when dd was in for her last visit. Do you know why he'd do that? If it's part of the protocol for visits now I'd like to be able to prepare dd for it so she knows to expect it.'

Did your daughter do ok with it? I know when Emily had to have her exam, we made sure to carefully prepare her for it, and fortunately the doctor was very gentle & dignified with her about it and she handled it well. But for kids that are beginning to develop a sense of privacy, to have a dr unexpectedly need to investigate down there can be quite embarrassing.
