So sorry your daughter is having issues with Bactrim! Make sure your providers know about the side effects. Have you tried Linezolid? It's a more intense antibiotic that worked well when Bactrim no longer worked on my son's mrsa or chest infections. You could also ask about taking probiotics while on antibiotics. It seems to help stomach issues.
Talk with your doctors about the GI effects of this medicine. Is the acid level in her stomach too high? Do they need to adjust the levels of the ant-acid she takes? Your daughter shouldn't have to hurt to get medicine that helps.

Good luck!
christine, mom to Joey (12 yrs w/CF) and Lizzie (14 yrs w/out CF)

We have talked to her docs about her side effects.  They say that since this is the only oral that will take care of her bacteria our only other choice is IV.  I will mention the other medicine you gave me though and see what they say.  I always like to be informed and not just take their word as gospel.

Argh, sorry to hear about this. I have a horrid time with bactrim too. It gives me the most painful acid reflux, to the point where I cant even lie down and the acid feels like its burning my mouth! I also get really bad diareah. Some things that helped.....eating rice 3-4 times a day and at least a banana or two per day. ALways making sure I took the bactrim on a full stomach, and with slowly digesting meat in there. I also increase my dose of prilosec, and if my stomach is going to be empty during the day, have some tums on hand. I also drink, drink, drink. Lots of water, herbal teas, and stay away from the dairy. Slight dehydration combined with antibiotics always gave me a headache too. Dont if any of this will help your dd, but I hope you find something soon that will!

Just as an update, we went to the clinic yesterday and got put on Doxycycline. It's another oral antibiotic and hopefully it will work to clean up her bacteria. FYI, the dosing is a pain though. It's only twice a day but she can't have any dairy within 2 to 3 hours of taking it, before or after. For a CF diet, that is tough.
