IV abx

I went on home IV antibiotics yesterday- Bactrim and Keflex. Both I have been on before with no problems. I think they are stronger doses this time because they are making me so sick.

Since my first dose yesterday I have been vomiting and queasy. My doctor gave me an rx for something to help...but that is really only taking the dry heaving away....nothing else. I still vomit about 5 min after starting and have a hard time stoping until my stomach is empty. I even threw-up stomach acid this morning.

Is this normal for any of you? How did you handle it? I don't know if I can go the next 3 weeks like this....let alone my weight. Sigh.

Now is the onset of diarhea.

The things we go through to have a few weeks of health.

happens to me a lot. especially when my weight is already low (probably b/c the abx is stronger concentration when dispersed throughout a body that is at a lower weight than the last iv treatment)

Umm, I am 22 and normally in full time school, so my mom would have to stay with me and cook for me and I would attempt to eat and keep it down.

I usually tend to stick with floats and milkshakes for most meals when I am this sick, just b/c its easier on the stomach (for me, probably b/c not very acidic). I live on 7-up vanilla ice cream floats... when they come back up, it kinda still takes sweet from the 7-up syrup.

I also noticed that if I start taking Megace (the steroid appetite stimulant) it really helps me with the nausea and I start eating, which I think helps the abx in the long run.

Zofran and another nausea one that starts with a "P" I used last bout of iv/nausea and it helped a lot... I had to use two meds b/c zofran wouldnt last long enough.

if you do take it orally though it has to be on a schedule b/c its hard to keep from puking if you wait to take until you are already nauseated... I wouldnt take it until too late a lot of times, but when I took it before ever letting myself get quezy then I noticed it definitely helped.

do you have a feeding tube? i used to have lots of problems with my stomach and throwing up/diarrhea and i would loose a lot of weight resulting in getting sicker fast. as soon as i started using the feeding tube i could keep a normal weight no matter what and then i started having a lot less problems with stomach issues and weight and also started eating more normally

I was very naudeaus during my second-to-most-recent IV antibiotics episode. I was in-patient for it, and I had IV Zofran infused while getting my doses. My nausea was almost immediate. At the time, I was very sick and not eating much, so that may be part of the equation.

Ask about anti-nausea meds. They can help.
