Hi Christina,

I have had nausea with oral & IV abx.. Are you eating before taking your meds ?? This is so important ..

Did you let the dr. know that the nausea med isn't cutting it ??

Just a heads up, are you drinking a lot 8 glasses of water a day ? I had renal failure due to iv abx becoming toxic due to having diarrhea & vomiting..

Hope you feel better soon .. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> joni

ugh, nausea is the story of my life! any and all antibiotics, oral or iv, trigger my nausea. here's my 2 cents:

zofran IV works the best. for some reason my homecare company won't let me administer it myself, so i don't do it at home.
zofran PO works best if taken 15 mins before the abx, and with a little bit of food
reglan PO - i'm allergic to it. awful reaction. there are serious problems with this drug, but it's another option you have.
phenergen PO- i didn't notice any improvement in my nausea
bendadryl PO/IV works best in conjunction with zofran at bedtime
ativan PO/IV works best in conjunction with zofran during the day
marinol helps low-end nausea and helps to give my appetite a boost. there are other appetite stimulating drugs (megace was mentioned, and periactin was alluded to, that might also help). periactin is an antihistemine like benadryl and phenergan.

ginger, gingerale (canada dry claims they use real ginger in their soda), etc, don't really do much for me.

i start to feel less nauseous after i get used to the abx, usually a week or so for oral drugs. iv drugs vary. i can't take a number of the strongest ones anymore because they make me too violently ill. like some people suggested, i do notice that when my weight is up and my nutrition is good (and i am well-hydrated) that I don't have as severe symptoms. My g-tube helps with that, especially because i can load up on zofran and benadryl before i go to sleep. i do end up shutting off my pump 3 or 4 hours before i wake up to give my stomach a chance to empty fully before i take my morning drugs.

good luck. nausea sucks!
