IV Antibiotics

Hi, my daughter has had several sinus infections & has been on so many oral antibiotics. She has been taking Zithro on for 5 days, off for 5 & back on now for 2 months & it still has not cleared. They are stopping the Zithro & called me yesturday & told me that they are going to try clendamyacin & augmentin together. My doctor wants to put her on IV Antibiotics but I am hesitant towards this because she just started Kindergarten & is sooooo far behind the other children already. We have already tried another one it think it was cyclosporine but I can not remember because it was 6 months ago.

My question is this--when you use IV Antibiotics do you come home with them or do you stay in the hospital? I have read some of both on this site. She has been on IV Antibiotics before this but she was a baby & it was pre dx of CF. Does it have any bad side affects? How long does it take? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I know you are scared and overwhelmed, but if the oral abx isn't cutting it, you want to kick it with the IVs. I negtiated with our docs from the beginning about coming home. They said that once they get a picc in and make sure all is going ok, we could go home for the remainder. We were in-patient 5 days and had the IV for 3 weeks. I'm not sure about side effects. Alyssa seemed to do well, though the IV slightly elevated her liver enzymes. Have you talked with the school about this possibily? If she comes home, could you send her to school if she feels okay, and just run up to give the meds if she is there over a scheduled time?

You can do this! I know its hard!! Hang in there.

My daughter is on her first round of IV's since she was 3 months old. We are going to be in the hospital for a few more days for a total of 5. Then she will finish the IV's at home. She is starting Kindergarten the following week. Depending on how her pft's are next week she might be on antibiotics for a total of 8-14 days. She is in here because her pft's are on the low side. Her Dr. mentioned she might need IV's soon if they don't improve and I jumped on getting them out of the way before her school started. Even if she does have to be on IV's a few days while in school she could go to school for most of the day. Also, the side effects depend on what type of IV's she is on.

Thank you for all of the advice. I have not talked to her school about this yet. I have a meeting with them next week & will be discussing it then. We started school here on August 1st so I guess it will not hurt her to miss a few days in the beginning.

I have a question, I should already know this. What is a picc line & how do they place it?
