Not sure about the ones you are talking about but I have had little spheres/balls and it runs on some sort of gravity. You just release the clamp and it runs into your iv. Kinda like a self pump. But there are ones that do run on a pump that is connected to a little fanny pack that you carry around. Hope that helps

If you check the other picc line thread where you asked me about the eclipse balls- I posted a picture of them from a site that explained how they worked. They are very handy since they don't require a pump or IV pole- when my daughter was on IV's at the hospital, once on 3 meds and the other time on 2, she spent much of the time needing to drag around a pole every time she wanted to move. These balls were about the size of a lemon and could go in a sweatshirt pocket, or any one of her enormous collection of little bags that she constantly carries around as a matter of course. ;-) They also sell something that looks like a belt clip you can hold them with.

The I.V. balls are basically the same thing. I've used the ones in bottles. For some reason, mine started coming inside of the bottles instead of just the ball itself. Like Jen said, it's a self pump. All you have to do is release the clamp and it automatically administers the medication...
