Hey everyone,

I just got out of the hospital and I found out that i am now resistant to tobaramison so they gave me imipenem and cefepime this time. I was just wondering if anyone has had these (esp the imipenem) and could give me some feedback on how they work and any weird side effects that you ahve gotten from them Just so i can keep a heads up. I know sometimes one of the meds makes my mouth taste metalic while im on it, almost like im sucking on pennies or something...its weird.

Anyway any suggestions would be great
Thanks
Melissa

I have been on both of those drugs. I think both of them are drip bags (at least that's how I get them from my supplier), and I'm pretty sure I had to mix the imipenem myself when I was at home.

As for side effects, the only one I can think of was with the imipenem. I infused it and ended up getting terrible phlebitis (sp?) in my arm, so bad that it made it numb. Solution? Just slow down the infusion rate a bit.

That was the only problem I ever had with any of those antibiotics. Other than the fact that they smell bad (I compare the stench to cat pee) LOL.

Good luck!

I have been on both drugs and did not have any particular side effects, other than being tired, which I experience every time I'm on IV antibiotics. Hope these drugs knock out the bugs for you.

I had a similar reaction to imipenem plus nausea
and sweating they stopped it after a few days they
couldn't get it under control and my symptoms kept getting worse oh
and I had a fever that just kept climbing.  Yikes.  Good
times. <br>

Both my boys are on imipenem right now and they will be for 3-5 months. Josh got very nauseous with it but it seems to be getting better. He still has NO appetite. Both boys are very tired for about an hour after the dose. That is also getting better.

Good luck

I've been on both and dont remember any kind of reaction other than maybe a little bit of nausea during the beginning of the 2 week coarse, But within a few days it subsided.

I was just in too and had cefepime for the first time, I was like WTF is this? I was also on meropenum, which I hav before, but I had massive appetite loss, they say it was the meropenum but ive never had that reaction before. I think it was the cefepime.

i aslo think the phlebitis can be cause basically by all iv antibiotics at a high infusion rate. veins are sensitive, I really have none left, i cant even get midlines anymore its all picc for me. although 2 admissions ago (8 weeks ago) i had the whole admission on saline locks (9 of them) so that mangled me a bit.
