IV meds at home

Hi! Rachel just got done with her first ever home IV's. She was in in Nov. too. Wonder if she and Dan were in at the same time? That first semester of school took it's toll on her. She was released on home IV on Tues. before Thanksgiving after 13 days in the hospital.

Ask for the little balls for home IV. If Dan's not used them before they are much better than a pump. BUT, if you're using Corum they are now putting those balls in a bottle so they aren't as "small" anymore. They actually look like baby bottles! Still, they were better.

I am sure you know, but remember to ask them what the hours are gonna be. When Rachel was in the hospital one of her meds. was Q6 but when they released her they changed it to Q12. Much, much better.

Everyone else pretty much covered it. Taking the meds out an hour before really helps it to flow faster, but occasionally (with Anna) we'd forget and ran it anyway. She never had a complaint other than it took longer.

Did Dan finish up his finals? Rachel has one last one tomorrow, then she'll fly home. I hope Dan feels better quick.

I am also doing home IVs right now. I also take the meds out of the refrigerator a couple hours(or more) before dosing as they go a little quicker when they are not so cold. I would also try to get on a schedule that works for you and not the home care company. You should do your best to work the med schedule around your life and not the other way(although this is easier said than done). I also keep supplies(flushes, heparin, alcohol swabs) in multiple places to make it easier to take care of these as IVs finish up.

Dan got his PICC today, and what a crappy day, the roads were horrible going up. He is home for christmas, so at least he won't have to worry about doing it when he is in college. He IVs are twice a day thankfully, so he has himself on a schedule that will work nicely for me. No IV pumps, it's all either the baby bottle or push in the syringe manually. Only thing is that the dr forgot to write a script for the bactrim he want him on. The home health care place is great, they work with us to fit our schedule. However they PICC line they put in, is sluggish, which makes us very nervous. I know there is more, but I am exhausted and will post more tomorrow.
