every morning for over a month. I don't know what's going on!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"> I wake up and as soon as I get up, my lungs feel very constricted and tight and I can't get in enough air. I have to use my albuterol inhaler right away and that helps somewhat, and then slowly I start feeling better. Last week I vacuumed under and behind my bed to make sure it wasn't the dust or something getting to me, but even that did not help.

Has anyone else experienced this?? Like I said it is always at it's worst when I get up in the morning. I never wake up in the middle of the night or anything, just when I get up.

Thanks,
Jen 34 w/cf

P.S. Also, I have tried doing my albuterol treatments before going to bed at night and I still wake up the same way.

Yes it has happened to me a lot but not every morning for a straight month. But I do know excactly how it feels. Its called a "lung spasm" it has to do with the mucus in your lungs, for me (happening just every once in a while) my doctor said that's normal. But if I were you, I would see your doctor, cause something else might be going on and you should get checked out, could be a lung infection starting, I would guess that the mucus in your lungs is settling over night and that is why you experience the pain in the morning. Does that make sence? Please get checked out though cause it doesnt sound normal and I know that pain your feeling is no fun at all!

hey jen,
it might not hurt to try a hepa air filter...i dont know, but sometimes you can develop allergies you dont' even know about. i got one and it is cool because when i wake up mornings i will feel a bit more clear and refreshed. do you hav any furry pets in the house? but yeah cause there can be lots of crap and dust in the air.........

Jen,

Several things may cause your symptoms. I would make a couple of suggestions.

If you take pulmozye late in the evening yuu may want to take it earlier.
Albuterol really only lasts 4 hours, you might consider waking up and taking a treatment or talk to your doc about a long lasting inhaler like serevent
Have you been diagnosed with reflux, reflux is a major cause of nocturnal bronchospasm. Maybe consider some prilosec before bed.
Lastly..you may need a sleep study, you may be having sleep apnea or noctural hypoxia, this is something else a doc must do.

I will tell you this, I wake up feeling awful EVERY Day and have for quite sometime. there is no real reason other than CF that we have found.

I was thinking about your post last night and I was wondering if your air filter for you furnace in you house may have some dust in it? Could they be due to be changed? If your symptoms continue...go to the doctor....maybe something else than an alergen.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all of the replies! Well, I know that we have a complete home air filtration system and that the filter was recently changed, as well as the furnace filter. We do not have any pets except a guinea pig, and it stays in my daughter's room upstairs (our room is on the first floor) at all times.

I am not currently on TOBI....I have been in the past and with me that causes extreme bronchospasms!!!

I only use my Pulmozyme in the morning or afternoon, not at night.

And I am not experiencing any pain when I get up, only tightness and breathlessness.

I did mention this to my doc at my last clinic appt Feb 21st. I have not since contacted them about it though....I guess it's time that I do!

I may try getting a portable air filtration system for just our bedroom though too, and see if that makes any difference. I am also going to have the carpets cleaned...they have not been cleaned in almost a year. I try to do it yearly at least.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted!!

P.S. Yes, I do have relfux & take Nexium daily. I have found that regardless if I take an extra 150 mg Zantac at night before bed I still wake up the same.

wow, that's been happening to me too a lot lately (though it sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night and happens during the day)...I thought it was humidity, dust, or my confined, stuffy dorm room, but now I'm not so sure. The last time it happened I went to the ER for it (I woke up feeling like someone was holding a pillow over my face and I ran out of albuterol). After that, my doc put me on Prednizone to open me up...it worked really well, but now it's happening again and I'm actually waiting for the doc to return my phone call about it. It's a lung spasm?
