IVF/PGD and pregnant...

I know there has been talk of IVF and PGD on here. We have a two year old with CF and decided that taking the 25% chance was not for us.
So we just compeleted IVF/PGD and found out that I am pregnant. It is still early so we are nervous but as of now thing are going well. We had two non CF embryos transferred back in and are waiting to see if they both implanted.
Of course, PGD is not 100% accurate so we are just praying that they did their job right. We feel we did everything medically possible to avoid CF, now we wait.
If anyone wants any info, feel free to ask.
Insurance covered the IVF part but we paid out of pocket for PGD expenses, about $5,000 or so.

Congrats Megan!! I am so happy for you all! Many prayers that this will be a very healthy pregnancy! Are they planning to do an Amnio at some point to make sure the baby does not have CF? When are you due?

Hi Megan,
Congrats!!!!! Hope all goes well and keep us posted!!!

I do have questions for ya if you dont mind me asking.

What did they say your chances were now of having a baby with cf? I know the PGD is not 100% gauranteed so I was just curious. Also how did you find the clinic that did it? I live in California and have done some research ont his because I have cf and my husband and I are considering having our own child. And of course I want to do as much as I can to avoid our baby having cf. We have not had him tested yet but we will be soon. I just want to have a backup plan in the event he is a carrier. I have found a couple of places that do the PGD but I dont have any references to go by. Also what insurance do you have that covered the IVF? I find that so wonderful that they covered that for you. That saved you alot of money. Thanks for letting me pry into your business.....LOL.

I am happy for YA!!!!!!

We used Dr Mark Hughes from Genesis Genetics in Michigan. He pioneered the CF process and has done hundreds of PGD CF cases. I believe the rate of error is less than 2% esp with our Double Delta case. IVF was covered by NJ Plus Horizon Blue Cross. I am a teacher and have pretty good insurance, I fought for the PGD but was repeatedly denied.

We went to an IVF clinic in NJ. After embryos are fertilized, a cell is taken at Day 3 and sent to Michigan. They test the DNA of the cell for 19 straight hours and on Day 5, send the results back to the IVF clinic. Then the transfer. Good luck, Megan

Doesn't NJ have the Family Building Act? New Jersey law requires that group policies covering 50 or more people, and covering pregnancy-related expenses, need to cover the cost of the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. This includes sugery, IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, ICSI, embryo transfer, and IUI. Up to a maxmimum of four egg retrievals can also be performed. Religious organizations may be exempt.
