So after talking to a friend of mine online, and seeing people talking about IVF/PGD, I was wondering if anyone knows the approximate cost for one cycle of going through this process? I know some insurances are accepted with some of the clinics, but in the event that insurance isn't involved, and we have to pay out of pocket. I mean, if anything, it wouldn't happen for a few years, but if we can financially afford to weed out the chance of a 2nd child having cf, I think we'd do it. Not that we would love the child any differently, and sometimes part of me thinks even if we were to have another child w/cf, the 2 may be able to relate more to each other as sibs. Oh well... back to the original thought-

Hi Lisa. We used IVF/PGD to have our second son. Often you can get IVF covered through your insurance. We have BlueCross Blue Shield. PGD was not covered even after many appeals and letters from Dr Hughes, the genetic scientist who did our PGD. PGD with the ICSI (Which also wasn't covered) probably wound up being about $10,000? The IVF rounds and meds were probably over $20,000 but we never saw those bills. We did 3 rounds of IVF. So the bulk of the cost is the IVF and medications. You can check out genesis genetics.com for info on PGD.

I happen to be a huge advocate of PGD. To me, prevention is key and knowledge is power. Does it mean I love Aidan (our CFer) any less? Nope, he is our world and his health is always our priority. We knew we could give him the best medically and financially if he were our only child with CF. People claim it is playing God but that is really the nature of medicine.

The geneticist/doctor that we used insisted we use ICSI for PGD. It makes the results more accurate if only one sperm is able to penetrate the egg. We sent many appeals to our insurance company about the cost of PGD vs another child with CF. It didn't matter- they refused to cover it.
