What kind of job do you all have or career choices? Are you currently working? Just wondering about everyone. I am a manager at a grocery/dept store. I have been on leave since March. I'm currently a student in college. But I know pretty much what I'll be doing when I get out, so I wanted to reply. Heh. I'm an American Sign Language major at NU, and when I graduate I intend to interpret for the Deaf. Probably at either a hospital or school or something of the like. If my health and FINANCES permit (heh), I intend to go back to school to get a Master's in Deaf Education in order to teach Deaf students. I had a summer job at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT, and I loved it! I'd love to eventually maybe get a permanent job there.

Slightly random on my part, but Emily, how did you get interested in sign language? Did you have a deaf person in your life growing up? I'm just wondering because it is a fairly unique career path <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I am also a college student. I play the tuba (yes, the tuba <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">) and am majoring in music education. I plan to direct high school band or teach elementary. I may even shoot for college band <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> but we'll see where I am when I graduate.

BTW...emily, do you live in the dorms at school?

That is very cool that you are majoring in sign language. We have a deaf gentleman at work and he would teach us different words each day in order to communicate with him other than using pen and paper. It was fun. Erin playing the tuba is very unique as well. I bet it really helps your lungs work out though. I'm doing some volunteer work for the needy for Christmas to occupy some time. I enjoy it. I thought it would be fun to know what everyone does other than having CF. Thanks. Eva

Well I went to Quincy College last year for a Surgical Technician program. I loved it but after I graduated I got really sick. I had a horrible pneumonia, which they thought was cysts or something in my lungs and they did a bronch. after the bronch i wasnt able to breathe and they almost had to put me on a ventilator. then i got septic and was i guess dying but no one told me that. they finally gave me meds that was going to get rid of the bacteria in the blood. so since last year when that happened ive been in and out of the hospital too much to be able to work. i would love to do something but at this point i just cant. especially since i am going to be evaluated for a lung transplant so ill have lots of appts comin up for that! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> i also have sinus surgery coming up in about a month and im also getting a g-tube. so maybe after x-mas once things settle down a bit i might take a few classes on something to fill some time!!

I took a signed English class in my high school and even though I knew it was different than ASL, I fell in love with it. I took that class sophomore year in high school, when I was.. 15. And I've known since then that it was what I wanted to do. So when searching for a college, I intentionally looked for ones with a Bachelor's Degree in ASL... and that's what I've found here at NU. It's one of the best damn ASL programs in the country, and even though I miss home (I am NOT a city girl), I love my academic program.

I actually work at a coffee shop (for those who don't live around in Canada or the michigan or ohio area) at Tim Hortons. It's good cause after 6 months (I worked at the one in Windsor for a year and a half) I get life insurance(no questions asked) and benifits which is good cause in may I'm off my parents. But yeah, it's only annoying cause when have to cough people think I'm sick, but usually when I have to i try and run to the back.
