Job problems b/c of CF?

<br>I was wondering if anyone here has been discriminated against at work for having CF. When I was diagnosed I checked with my lawyer. He told me to fill out the intermittent FMLA papers b/c if I didn't I would have no recourse if I was discriminated against. However, the unbalanced HR director at work has tragetted me BECAUSE of my CF and beause I filled out the fmla papers. she did this when i was covered under short term fmla 3 years ago too_Of course it is illegal. My lawyer has already written her 1 letter. However who want to go through the stress (which makes you sick) of battling an employer with no ethics, morals or compassion? I don't but I am not going to put up with their non sense either. Anyone else had a problem?

I have! About 3 years ago I had two interviews for a position as the receptionist at an investment firm. It was my dream job because they would teach me things along the way and then would eventually have sponsered me to take the test to become a broker. (Which is what I am currently going to school for.) ANYWAYS... At the end of the 2nd interview they offered me the position. Before I accepted, I told them about my CF and wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to be a problem because I couldn't afford to lose my job and not have health insurance. That night, they sent me AN EMAIL..couldn't even call me.... and told me that it just wouldn't work if I would have to be out for a hospital stay. Unfortunately, they were owners of a small firm and there is some kind of loophole that protects them from being sued for that. :/ It crushed me. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I have never discussed my having CF with an employer prior to being hired. I have found that most people are completely ignorant to what CF really is. If they have heard about it, they usually have very dated information that paints an even uglier picture than reality. If they find out about my having CF at some point, at least they have had time to get to know the real me.

Unfortunately, being an EOE does not include health status. Additionally, I live in Pa, which is an at will employment state. At any time I can end my employment with or without cause, and so can they. I think it's better to not give them more reasons for firing you or laying you off should the opportunity arise.

I mean, I'm not looking to be fired for whatever reason- especially because of my CF. The laws are nicer there. (although I'm leaving for college soon, to NC)</div>

Just my personal opinion, but it's NEVER a good idea to discuss your CF with an employer prior to hire. It just gives them a reason not to hire you, and lets face it, most people are not moral. Althought they "legally" can't deny you employment because of a disability, if you put the ball in their court BEFORE they hire you, you have NO recourse.

Just my personal opinion, but it's NEVER a good idea to discuss your CF with an employer prior to hire. It just gives them a reason not to hire you, and lets face it, most people are not moral. Althought they "legally" can't deny you employment because of a disability, if you put the ball in their court BEFORE they hire you, you have NO recourse.

I agree with what some have already said -- never discuss CF with your employer prior to being hired.

A couple of my co-workers know I have CF because they are my friends on facebook, and my boss knows -- he is really cool though, and actually donated to my fundraiser. But again, don't bring it up before you're hired. Even after you're hired I would only disclose on a need-to-know basis.
