Hi. I've been wondering what kind of work you all do. How does an employer handle when you have to take off for IV's etc.? Are there laws that protect you so that an employer has to give you time off for health reasons? Thanks.

There are indeed laws regarding sick time and other such problems CFers might have. One is the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was put into law in 1990.

</a>Another is the Family and Medical Leave Act put into law in 1993.

</a>There may be more, but those are the ones offhand that I know of.

The FMLA act is great except it only covers you for 6 months. Luckily my job has a disability program, which I qualified for. I'v been off for a year. Have a CF doc appt thursday. So I'm excited to see how I do. I'v been working very hard. Becky In mich

I'm an assistant manager in retail so if I need time off I have to make sure that any of my scheduled shifts are covered. I just made sure from the beginning that my manager and district manager understood that my health comes first and from time to time I'm going to need time off. They both understand what CF is and how serious it is for me when I get sick so there has never been a problem. If I needed an extended period of time off (which I haven't yet) I can take a leave of abscence under the Family Medical Leave Act. This is the same act that allows for meternity leave.
