Just CAN'T/WON'T eat

My son is getting over a virus. He had fevers-103 for a week, very tired and not hungry. So many kids around here have had it. Although his fevers are gone, he still won't/can't eat! He has lost weight and still has no energy. He does have a g-tube and we giving regular feeds at night and gatorade during the day, but I'm getting really worried. We're wondering if he's getting to the anorexic stage, or maybe I'm just overreacting?

BTW, we had him checked out at the cf clinic- x-rays, bloodwork all fine.

UPDATE 4/14 Just now, his fever is 103 again, his o2 sats 91 and his heart rate is 154. I'm waiting for the doctor to call back, but it looks like we're on our way back to Children's. Poor kid.
I'll let you know.

hey well recently i have been exactly the same, just not in the mood to eat and not hungry at all.. so i feel there is no need for me to eat, but i kept on getin told i need to eat or i will really get sick, so ihave just started nibbling little things to give my body something to work on. i cant really explain the feelin that goes thru ur body but u just cant be botherd with any thing. all i can say is try and give him a little something to nibble on, if that dosent work i am not sure what to do.

Well, I know when I have an exacerbation I usually have no appetite for a week or two. I think that's not good-but its normal.
Have you tried giving him his favorite foods-like anything he wants? Even rootbeer floats, milkshakes, popsicles, pudding, kiddie yogurts-(the fun overpriced kid ones?)- At this point even he wanted soda I'd give it to him in moderation.

I wouldn't panic yet that he's getting no appetite-with a fever and virus like that it's pretty common-so don't jump the gun. Maybe try a reward system-"if you eat 2 pops you can.."...play video games, whatever?

I don't know how active he is-but my mom wouldn't let me go play outside until I finished all my snack after school, or all my portion of dinner, or had a whole glass of milk. I guess I'd try anything.

i agree with christian. just give him what he really wants. i can tell you now someone with no appetite wouldnt want regular food. when im sick i only eat stuff thats either not meant for a meal, too expensive or too far away because its the only thing thats tasty enough. stick a toasted cheese sandwich in front of my face and im likely to pull it apart and smush em in your nose. try to get him to drink a meal replacement drink if he doesnt want to eat solids for a meal.

Thanks, but when I say he doesn't want to eat, I mean NOTHING appeals to him. We've tried everything, even "junk" soda, chips, jello.

Good to see a post from you, Jane. (I was a tad worried.) But sorry to see the topic and reason....

I can understand why you're worrying, but having just had a fever of 103 it hardly seems a clear time to think about him being in a new stage.

My husband would loose his appetite sometimes during/after being ill. Sometimes it was just the illness/fever, sometimes it was from the meds, sometimes he would be discouraged, sometimes - as impossible as it seemed given how little he had eaten - he would get blocked up (maybe because of dehydration from the fever).

He didn't have a jpeg so it was just "ensure time".....

Hopefully, this will pass soon.

I tried to PM you but failed, if you need any help locally pm me or something....

Thanks everyone and
Thanks for your concern LisaV,

I'm not usually a hysterical mother, but he has so much going on emotionally recently. Lots to deal with.

Looks like we're going in to checked out..... I'll let you know.

Jane

You are NOT hysterical and you are NOT overreacting. It's scary and you are doing everything right. You came here for advice and you're going to the hospital...those are the right things. Hang in there and keep us posted please.

Thanks everyone

Josh had a nap and his O2 went up a little and his heart rate and fever went down a lot. He woke up hungry for pizza.

The docs said come tomorrow to be admitted instead of tonight in the ER.

Tonight, a glass of wine for me and Josh's own bed for him.
