Hi all. i was just wondering how much you all pay for your med's and do you get any discounts, because you have a genetic disorder?

This is what i pay in Australia:

eg: anti-biotics (Fluclox) $4.60 bottle with subsidy
without subsidy $18.80

- Vitab- Deck $22.95

- creon 5 $4.60 for 5 bottle with subsidy
without subsidy $120.00

+ extras we chooseto use ie por-biotics $48, oil with essen fatty acids $28 both non subsidy items.

My husband was curious, as to how much you all pay for your meds and do you get subsidy for them.

Any info would be appreciated, thankyou.

cant you get your vitabdeck from the hospital pharmacy eli? my hospital supplies it so i can get it for 4.60 instead of paying full price from the cf association.

We have pretty good insurance. Just mostly co-pays is where they get us. Meds are 2 dollar copay-the rest is covered. So that's great.
The doctor office/or procedure copays are 25-50 dollars depending on what I need and each time I go. So if I have a picc line put in, iv, lots of blood work, there's a copay. I can't complain-b/c we have great insurance. But it does add up.
It seems like the insurance company is always trying to sneak in a charge or deny payment on a pressciption though.

We are fortunate enough that Courtney's father is in the military so we don't pay anything for her medications or doctor's appointments.

We get everything covered here that is pretty standard at the hospital in toronto.

Some stuff, like HS, pulmozyme, zithromax and some other expensive drugs aren't covered, whereas you can get insurance from the gov that will pay for it.

We are pretty well off in Canada. It's mostly the over the counter supps that kill me...ie the DHA, OO, NAC, GSH etc...they add up over time.

I don't pay for anything here in Manitoba Canada. I know its different for every province - some provinces give you major discounts, but here in Manitoba the government pays for all of my meds.

I am getting really frustrated by my insurance. The Advair I just got is $216.58 for a 90 day supply. The pulmozyme is $80.00 for a 90 day supply. If I wasn't doing these mail order, it would be alot more.

Any prescription med is either $5 or $10 depending on which it is. Colistin, weirdly (since it costs over $6,000 for a month), only costs me $5. But then I also have to buy the needles, the saline, and the sterile water. Ah well.

I hate paying so much money for meds (only because I'm on so many), but I can hardly complain, I know we have good insurance.

My son's meds are free up until he is 16 , adults pay £6.50 per prescription, unless they are on income benefits. In Britain, some illnesses are exempt from any charges, these illnesses are life-long ones such as diebetes. You would have thought that CF would be one of these exemptions, but it is not, apparently when the the list of exemptions where made up, in the 50's, the life-expectency of CFers as we all know, was pretty low, under 10. So the government seen no need to add it to the list, now that we have advanced so much, there are pressure groups that are trying to change this, that is to update the list of exemptions. Asthma is not even on this list.

I'm in the US...no drug coverage, don't qualify for any assistance. The "help" I have is the Together RX card

Spiriva is about $90 a month, Xopenex is $85 for 1 box of 24 vials, TOBI is $3500 for a month. Albuterol is around $15 a box(25 vials), Atrovent is $20 for 60 vials. Nasonex is around $60. Hypertonic saline is around $50 a month

Thats all my daily meds. Levaquin which I am on frequently is around $120 for 10 500mg pills. the last time I was on it 10 750mg pills was $275

I remember when TOBI charged my insurance just 3500 a month....those were the good old days. I got a call the first month of the new year from my insurance company saying that TOBi exceeded the 7000 mark for a prescription-(7300 to be exact) and I had to get a special authorization note to get it covered!!!!!!!!!

Fortunately my insurance covered every penny. So I'm fortunate for that.

We have Rx coverage, but spend abou $350-$400 a month just on our stupid co pays. With three the copays can really add up. We just changed providers and instaed of a $50 copay, now its $30, which really helps over time.

I live in Spain with my, Mum and Step-dad, who pays social security, so I don't have to pay anything for medication or hospital stays which is just as well as I take loads of meds.

I am also in Australia but I don't have a health care card so pay around $30 for each of my prescriptions. When I'm getting a bunch per month though, that really adds up. Thank God for PBS, even though it doesn't cover vitamins and Nasonex.

To the anon. poster that posted this..... I'm in the US...no drug coverage, don't qualify for any assistance. The "help" I have is the Together RX card.
Have you tried the patient assistance programs offered by the drug pharmacueticals? I get my meds (no c/f) this way. My daughter gets all of hers free because of her adoption subsidy.

Thank's to everyone for your responces. It interesting to see how the health system works in different countries.
I personaly think, that Cf being a lif long illnesss no one should have to pay full price for their medications. There should be some system put in place for people with a life long illness, so that they can pay for meds freely at low prices.

To Kylie (Kybert), thanks for the helpfull info. I too get my daughters vitab-deck from the hospital and knowone has mentioned to me that i can get them at such a low cost. I will check with them nxet time i go back, maybe they can back pay me the money i have so far spent.
Where in Australia do you live. WE are in Wllongong, 1 1/2 hrs South of Sydney.

To Emma (Wuffles), you are also entitles to recieve a hesalth care card. You need to go your local centrelink office and speak to someone. You should also get back pay for the money you have already speant n meds.
I think you are also entitled to an additional payment, because of your CF. Make sure you go and check this up, you poor thhing it must cost you so much without that card. Good Luck.
Let me know how you go.

Thanks Everyone
